I inherited a tank from my Dad and he had a skimmer that I am about ready to give up on it!  I am just now getting nitrates, pH, and ammonia under control, righ now fish only and want to start a reef tank soon.  Anyone have a bak pak skimmer that works well, have a 30gal now but may upgrade in the future so I would buy something that would work for a 55gal as well.

If you want something to last into the future I would consider something other than a backpak. Although you can get them cheap there is a reason for this, they don't perform that well. If you can spend a little more I would get a better quality skimmer.
Also, if you are looking for an HOB you may start planning your sump now if going reef and consider getting an in sump model skimmer.
These options cost more so if they aren't in the budget then by all means continue as planned. But as you get deeper in the hobby in the future these will be items to consider.

Depending on how heavily you stock that 55, a bakpak might not be sufficient for you. My very first tank was a 55 with a bakpak. At the time I didn't know better, but I simply wasn't getting enough skimmate. I currently have that same skimmer on a 29 and has a maxijet 1200 mod and it skims like a champ. I probably wouldn't feel comfortable putting it on anything much bigger, knowing what I know now. Many of them shipped with a rio pump. Let me just say, compared to the mj1200, it is junk. Luckily the mod is super easy (just need to add a venturi to the inlet) and the outlet of the MJ fits like a glove. I went further and did a needle wheel mod bu cutting a small bioball in half and using that as the impeller. That increased the bubble output and I get about hald a collection cup of skimmate every three or so days (empty it once or twice a week whenever I see it starts filling up. $40 is a decent deal for the skimmer. IMO, at that price, you can take a gamble and see if you like it.
