Depends but I saw one once that was black chrome or a black mirror. Would be hard to keep clean but looked pretty cool.

 

I saw some where that somebody used tinted acrylic with magnets for skin. Easy to remove for maitnance. Look pretty sweet.

 

The finish would all depend on what look you're trying to achieve. If the tank is in an older house with beautiful woodwork, try to get your hands on some reclaimed barn wood or do an antique finish on some new oak. If its in a more modern setting look in some sheets of stainless steel, acrylic or a more fancy type of wood. The options are almost limitless, what comes into play is cost to achieve your desired look and what's the right look to match your tanks surrounding decor.
