I currently have a 73 gal and had been wanting to go bigger but couldnt really decide what size. When I saw a 175 gal that fit where wanted to put it I went for it. This is still in the planning stages, have nothing but the tank/stand and some of the plumbing. With my 73(not drilled) Im running a hang on overflow into a sump that Im using for filter socks and to hold my chemipure and phoszorb. The 175 is drilled and Id like to make it a little more user friendly. I was thinking of doing a scrubber and in sump skimmer. Lighting Im kinda lost. Ive got 2 LED arrays on the 73 with 2 T5s and while almost everything I have is doing great(hard coral doesnt do as well), I can see some stretching to the light. Ive got 2 more T5s to go in and see if that helps. Id like to be able to have anything clams and such. Just looking for advise or if anyone has done a setup of this size willing to share their knowledge.

Mine isn't the greatest looking right now, but hoping to change that in the next couple months. You're more than welcome to come check out my setup to get some ideas on equipment and plumbing and such.

What is that, 6ftx2ftx2ft? Scrubber is a great idea. For lighting I would go with reefbreeders, ocean revive (I really want to try out their light) or reef radiance. All 3 of those are full spectrum Chinese LED. I wouldn't go with less than 3 fixtures, personally I would go with 4 value units or equivalent.

    Here are a few ideas

What are the dimensions of the new tank?

Sump, make it as big as possible, but shallow as well.

Skimmer, bigger is better to remove those dissolved organics.

    Dual purpose reactor for carbon/gfo.

Tank is a bow front, dimensions are 72", 17" at the ends, 24" at the center, 29" deep. Looked at the above mentioned lights and they werent bad. Also looked at a 1000w led kit and add some T5s. Have seen suggestions on lighting as 4-8 watts per gallon. Didnt know if this was correct and what others are running wattage wise. In looking it seems its personal preference, some run a skimmer only, some scrubber, some both. I guess it probably comes down to stand space and what will fit.

You should look into the kessil A360WE's. I've got one and love it. Do some research on it and you'll find most of the lighting experts also recommend it. You'd need 3 for your tank.

Go big for the sump and skimmer. The size of the tank should allow you to put a 75 gallon tank in there with room for everything else. If the 75 is too tall(depending on stand height), you could pick up some acrylic and make your own sump. With sumps having so many baffles to add to the support, you'd only need 1/4". I personally have made my own sumps for the last systems I've done. It doesn't have to be pretty, only functional.

Make sure you think out regular maintenance into your plans.

Keep us updated and do a build thread if you can!

I really like kessil, but I am not sold on them for SPS tanks. Fish only and LPS sure, which maybe perfect for the OP, but when tanks get out of the frag stage and you really have large SPS colonies I have had bad trouble with small cluster light sources like kessils self shading and then eventually having serious tissue recession. I think they are making a larger fixture later this year. But I would like to hear if anyone has large colonies, like 2ft size, under just 1 or 2 point sources and if they have had issues with them.
