    hi everyone

just starting a new 30 gal reef tank. Ive had some experience with my moms 90gal tank, helping her set it up and do some of the heavy work. I watched her tank over x-mas and took my roomate with me. The next day he was out getting a 14gal nano cube at the LPS. Haha. Hes had it for about 2 months and it seems pretty stocked to me. chromis, clown, mandrinfish (who is doing great, and everyone says it cant be done, he is fat and eats constantly, he takes mysis shrip and small frozen food, awsome!)two shrimp, a few hermit crabs, polyps, a mushroom, two snails.

So now i gave away my bright yellow 7" chiclid. And the tank has been converted. I have live sand and a few rocks in it, Used reef crystals, and got a coralight T-5, and am running two mini Rapids canister filters in-line, I have had these going for 2weeks now and i love'm, quite and pumps well with good seals, i did mod mine by drilling out the flow meter. They run in-line with a sponge and carbon filter and live media in the second one. I have a 29x18x12 tank. I chose to keep it cause I like the hieght of the tank. just hope my T-5's work. might have to get two. I do like how they are silent as they do not need a fan on the balast. I put a few rocks in it that are scraps from inside my mom and roomates tank. I did boil one rock that had aptasia on it as they are a pain (lemon juice works great/w bits of small shrimp soaked in it). I hope these rocks jump start my tank cycle. going to take some water tests and then mabey drop a green chromis in and his buddy if the first one does okay.

I am hoping to start with some basic corals but my main goal is to have a pair of red mandrinfish. any advice?

    The Question?

I will be getting an order of live rock tomorrow. It is fiji rock from oceanpro (good deal! @ >$3 a lbs w/ shipping). Should i boil the rock before putting it in my tank. Im also thinking just scalding it in boiling water for 5 sec(?) and then shaking it out in some saltwater. What do you all think? and all advice is appreciated.

    Thanks

I wouldnt unless it covered with algea or aptasia. just put it in and let your tank run its cycle before adding livestock.

if it is live rock, then why back step? Or is it dry rock?

if the rock looks clean then I would just add it to the tank and let the cycle do the rest. Shaun

Man people are takeing the term cooking rock to literal! You don't boil the rock when you cook it it is just a term used to discribe a prosess that cleans the built up organics out of the rock.

Unfortunately you won't really know if the rock looks clean or not until you get it in some saltwater so any hitchhikers that are on there come to life. If you don't see a large amount of aiptasia, majano, excessive undesirable algaes, etc., I would not cook it. And as Bill says, cooking is just a term for a process to kill off the life on existing rock, not physically putting it in the oven or under boiling water. If you do decide to cook it, here's how:

Update. Got the rock and It had been held up during shipping so right away i could tell their was dead organisms. too bad looked like the rock had lot of stuff on it. but may be it killed hitchhikers i didnt want. to i just let it sit in some water then scrubbed it good. I should have scrubed some more but was to excited to set the rock up. The hermit crab i got love to tear up all the dead organic material. i did notice two small corals, a sponge, and some green grass type plants are all alive and look good for now. my tank has kinda gone back into a cycle so im just watching it before I add any thing else.

thanks for the help everyone. ill try and get some photos up.
