So im wanting to store 5 gal of saltwater. Can i just seal it in a 5g bucket? 8g biocube wont take much for water changes so id like to have a big batch ready.

I keep a 44 gallon brute with mixed salt water all the time. I have a maxi jet 1200 pump turn on for 10 minutes every 3 hours. Works fine.

As long as the bucket you store it in doesn't leach anything it should be perfectly fine.

Never thought of that. That would save a lot in electricity.

The bucket is a 5g pickle bucket. So its food grade. I cant image itd leach. So if i shook the bucket once a day would that suffice?

you'll get varied opinions on mixing. I think there are even some salt mixes that recommend not continuously mixing after its initially dissolved in the water. Choose your salt mix and see what's recommended for it.

Im buying pre mixed sw. Petco sells 5g jugs that sit on the shelf for who knows how long. But then again, thats "Pacific" water.

Some salt mixes will precipitate if you continuously mix them, like Red Sea Coral Pro or Aquacraft. Not sure what the going advice is on long term storage & periodic mixing of self-mixed SW though, and I'm not sure that's the same as the store-bought stuff in the jug (like, do they add something for that product, etc)

Well ill gamble with buying premixed from my local lfs and just keep the lid locked down and give it a shake once in a while

I use Aqua Vitro Salinity salt on one tank and Aqua craft on the others. Neither is supposed to be constantly mixed or precipitation occurs.
I haven't had any problems just mixing it periodically through the day.
I have it in a Brute barrel sealed up. With a line running out for auto water changes. The barrel never gets below half before I fill it again. Parameters are holding stable.
I know these salts are supposed to be mixed and used in 2 to 3 hours but I haven't had problems keeping it.
I do get some residue from the salinity salt but it's just in barrel. The aqua craft I usee within an hour or 2 of mixing.

When I had my biocube I just made mix in 5g bucket and put a lid on it. Would take a cut off milk jug and just scoop out ~2/3g from tank and add back the same scoop of new water from the bucket. Never had any issues or precipitation mixes I used. Would last around a month. One thing that helps is no heat being added from a pump. That can sometimes cause local precipitation.
