I'm considering changing substrate because what I have blows around if my circulation pumps are run too high, aimed wrong, too low in tank, etc.  I don't want to go bare bottom.  I'm looking at Carib Sea's Special Grade Reef Sand (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produ...catid=7326).  There are a couple reviews that say it stays put.  Has anyone used it, and are you happy with it?  Is anyone using something different that doesn't blow around?  Thanks.

I've used that Aragonite Sand that comes in 40lbs bags, it had a little bit bigger particles which didn't blow around as easy. But I've got to say, I love having a bare bottom...hehe /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif

SGRS is awesome. I use it on all tanks. As with anything, rinse it well. I found that putting about 1/4 bags or so in a 5g bucket then spraying with a hose on the jet setting and filling/dumping until it's reasonably clear makes it go in the tank without clouding up the water for too long. Last time I did this was 3 bags worth and the tank was clear within a few hours when running some pads. #1 product IMO

Thanks for the feedback. For the last five years or so, I have had a blend of Natures Ocean aragonite sand, Carib Sea aragonite, and maybe something else. I like it, but it is fine enough that it blows around in some areas. There have also been a couple occasions where I've gotten a small piece suck on my magnet cleaner and scratched my tank. I used crushed coral from 5 to 15 years ago, but wanted something smaller for gobies, blennies, etc. I like the maintenence aspect of bare bottom, but I can't bring myself to do it. Thanks again, I will give SGRS a try.

I have the same problem. I bought my sand from Marcos, 225 lbs of it. It's a fine sand, and blows around all over, and I still ave dead spots in the tank. Is it safe to add new sand to an existing tank without harm?

I ordered my first bag of Carib Sea's Special Grade Reef Sand from Foster & Smith. I ordered a couple other things too, got free shipping, and used the gift certificate from spring fest--Thank you spring fest committee and F&S [IMG]    Once I decide I like it, I will order a few more bags.  My plan is to rinse it and cycle it before putting it in my DT.  I will probably remove the old substrate and add the new substrate gradually, over the course of several days.  I'm not sure if I'm being overly cautious or not enough, but that's my plan for now.
I didn't answer your question MM because I don't know and I don't want to steer you wrong.  I would imagine that you could add a little bit at a time safely.  I guess the way to tell for sure is to watch ammonia, nitrtites, and maybe pH.
