Sump and Flow Questions

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by nanotank10, Oct 8, 2014.

  1. Alright so I'm setting up a new reef and in need of your collective plumbing wisdom! Also having trouble figuring out my flow/turnover rate. DT is an Oceanic 58 gallon RR with 1 middle overflow. Will be plumbed to sump approx 10' downstairs.

This is the sump in question 40 breeder, kind of went with my own design though I'm sure it's been done somewhere.

    Baffles are 3/8th inch glass.
    Main divider- 14 x 28
    First baffle-12.5 x 9
    Return baffle- 12.5 x 8.25
The way I designed it was with the hope that all water will be forced to go around the main divider through my assorted algaes and rock. Opposed to falling over the first baffle, bypassing bio-filtration and going directly into the return pump like I imagine a lot of the more traditional sumps tend to do.
Does this design look solid? Return pump is a Danner mag 9.5 with a projected flow of around 450 gph at 10' above to the main display.
Will the return keep up with display water coming in? Do I need another baffle or two after the skimmer to slow down the flow? Ideally water level will remain at 12.5 inches, leaving enough room for back flow in case of an outage.
Am i overlooking anything big? Thanks a lot, all input appreciated!

  2. No insight here? Bottom line: Will it work??

I think it will work fine. Its kind of like my set up. I filled the tank and built the sump with water coming in and skimmer in that department. Then over to the live rock and then to the return pump. then filled the sump and turned the pump on. Then filled it to were I wanted the water leavel to be in the sump and let it run. Then turned everything off to make sure it wouldnt be to much water coming back to the sump if I lost power. I put on the return a valve so that I can control the return if it was to much for the over flows could handle and not flood the display tank.
