Advice? Sump Design Help

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Dendro, Jul 9, 2016.

  1. My goal is to have my 110 up and running by the end of August and am getting closer. But would appreciate some ideas on how to design my sump and refugium. I have an old sump left over from when I had a 135 aquarium many years ago. The old sump is 26 x 14 x 14 and has one baffle in it 6.5 inches in that goes from the top to the bottom with a a half inch gap in the middle for the water to flow over into the main section, with a maximum volume of about 22 gallons. It is drilled at one end for an external pump. The second tank I would like to use 19 x 39.5 x 13 and is totally open with about 45 gallons in total volume. Both are made of acrylic.

Would love suggestions about how to set-up or design the sumps to house all of the equipment and refugium for the aquarium.

Thank you in advance for any input.

Are you planning to feed each sump and return to the tank separately, or run them in line somehow? I'd say throw your skimmer in the tank pictured, might need a set of baffles before the return, but with the external pump you have plenty of room to work with. Then use the other tank for a dedicated refugium.

Petco is having their $1/gallon sale.... personally, I would go with a bigger sump for a 110. A 40 breeder would be nice nice and get baffles cut at a local glass shop.

Not sure how many drains you have but you could put one to the refugium and t it off with a valve to control the water and run the remaining water to the sump than have the drain from the refugium go straight to the return pump chamber than you have less of a chance too loose copeapods/ampapods to the skimmer and they will go straight to the main display for the other fish to eat like a mandarin

  5. I really like that idea should be pretty easy to do as well. There is nothing drilled in the other acrylic tank and no baffles so would be pretty easy to do as well.

@Dave@Dave are you suggesting to add a third tank or just take out the smallest tank and replace it with a 40 breeder. If so would need to buy and then drill it for the external pump.

I was suggesting a larger sump vs. an additional tank. I can drill it for you if you go that route.
