Sump Media

Hated bio balls. I would personally use rubble and macro algae in my sump

 

I'd vote for actual live rock, or large rubble. Bioballs work great but can't really denitrate (or so I'm told). I'd go with the live rock and rubble if you really need pod production. Some macro could be in the same chamber as the live rock.

 

I would suggest a product made by Seachem called pond Matrix, They also make regular Matrix. The pond Matrix is just bigger than regular Matrix. i would put it in a high flow area of your sump in a mesh filter sock. The pond matrix looks like a rock abought the size of a marble. I use it and have been happy with it.

What type of sump are you using? do you have a refugium space or are you just using a berlin style sump? If you have space for a refugium style I would do BB with rubble on the bottom, an area where you can grow some algae, and some macro algae to add in to remove your NO3

 

Oh the bioballas are nice, If you want some I have crates full. literally boxes upon boxes. The live rock or rubble will be much much more porous and hold much more bio. Its also very hard to clean. I would stear clear of it.
