I have a refugium setup on my 60g tank and im wondering what should I have in there with my sand, rubble rock and cheato? Im starting to get some red slime on my cheato and I think I remember someone telling me that I should have either a few crabs or a snail in there as well.. Its not a very big sump, its only 17g. Any help is much appreciated...

    Thanks

    Adam

I look at it as long as it is growing down there and not in my display then i am happy. Maybe i am wrong but it seems to stay down there.

Are you tumbling the cheato? Removing some every so often? I don't think you just want it sitting there. I would think if you can get it moving and not clumped so tight the red slimey algae wouldn't have a chance to grow. I could be wrong though, i've never had any in my sump.

I take some out and as long as there is flow and not cloging and still growing means it is doing its job and cosuming the bad stuff in the water. Am i thinking wrong?

I had a fist size clump grow until it consumed the middle section of my 30g sump, about the size of a large watermelon, or a little bigger. It seems that once it has grown to the shape of the area it is in, it will start getting a red/orange-ish slime on the top or outer edges of it. Its not cyano, but kinda looks like it. I found that if you trim all the bad area out and try to move the cheato around every so often, it all stays much darker green and healthy looking. You dont have to grow crazy pulling it apart and moving it around, just at least rotate the clump every so often and trim a bit here and there so it keeps growing and absorbing nutrients. This is what I have learned from my own experience anyways....
