So I want to add a fuge to get some macro algae going and battle my hair algae issue. Do those of you running one have external skimmers or how are you preventing in-sump skimmers from becoming algae covered? I have been looking at some hang-on models and thinking about how i might rig them up on the sump but there really is no good way. I don't have room to hang one off the back of the tank.

I have a 40g breeder that is my sump split up in 3 parts, first part have my skimmer and bio pellet reactor and middle has my macro alage and the 3rd part has my return pump. Now mine is set up to run a external skimmer and never have ran one. my internal skimmer dont get covered in anything. Does your sump have baffels?

I have a 29g fuge with a ton of algae in it... and I just got one of those cheap tank dividers that have good flow through.... and set that up. So my heater and sock filter and algaes are all on the left. While my equipment is on the right of the divider. Keeps most if not all of the macro algaes out of equipment. I have also just wrapped intakes of jets and stuff with loose blue floss. works as well.

As far as algae covered (like with hair algae)... I'd throw an algae scrubber on it, and give it a constructive place to grow (and filter) and that place will be it's favored spot over your equipment. If you want you can take some cheap fish tank background and drape it over the portion with equipment if your light is too broad... that'll at least decrease excess fuge light in area's you don't want algae.

Do remember though.... hair algae and macro algae's are in direct competition for food source- nutrients... one will win in the end. Usually for a season both will grow but which ever one your diligent at keeping up on, will be what grows. My best advice is manually remove as much hair algae as you can, stock the sump with a good portion of macro's algae, and put a good light on it... watch it go! OR if macro algae isn't what you want, put an algae scrubber on it, and manually remove what you can from other area's of the sump.... only let it take over in the scrubber then after a while it'll tend to only grow there.

    best of luck!

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, it has baffles but I dont think it is big enough that i wouldnt get light spillage over onto the skimmer. I am limited in length on the sump as the stand is 36 inches long (it is a 150DD tank).

Interesting on the algae...i put in a tiny amount I got from a member inside the main tank and so far it is growing nicely. Surprisingly my yellow tang has not touched it yet so I MAY be able to keep it in the main tank. I just assume one of these days he will try it and wipe it out.

Thanks again. I am definitely thinking about the scrubber as a possible better option.

Do you run GFO in your tank? What's the phosphates and nitrate levels?

I have tried GFO multiple times and the tank always starts looking worse and getting a brown tinge despite keeping flow very low and rinsing. I am using BRS gfo. Maybe I should give it more time.

I have not checked nitrates for quite a while as the corals and anemones are doing fantastic. I have checked phosphates and they were not high but I believe they are getting soaked up by the hair algae so probably not detectable.

I am doing 5% water changes each week as it is difficult to do more until I redo my RO setup. Water out of the RO shows 0. Tank stock is low, 150 gallon tank with 1 small yellow tang, 1 lawnmower blenny, 1 starry blenny, 1 diamond sifter goby, 1 small maroon clown and a royal gramma that was just recently added.

Is it possible to have the skimmer upstream from the fuge? I have used HOB skimmers on sumps, you just need enough room between edge of tank and floor to let it hang like it should.

I've done that too... putting the skimmer before the fuge worked well!

Good ideas. I have a Reef Octopus in-sump skimmer that seems to work pretty well so I hate to abandon it but maybe that is an idea to switch to something i can locate outside the sump.

One CRAZY idea I had is to take a small wet dry filter and add it slightly elevated above the sump and use an overflow box on the side of it so it would drain down into the other sump with a little powerhead feeding it. It just seems like a lot of work and kind of a hack so I would prefer something a little cleaner.

Maybe one of those magnetic algae scrubbers would work better than a refugiium given my limitations.
