We are building a penthouse bachelor pad in the old great Furniture Mart building on 1st Street SE in Cedar Rapids. As part of the project, the client has requested that we design and install the mack daddy of all tanks. The sky is the limit as far as cost and design are concerned. Right now, we are thinking about the having Reef Savvy or Miracles construct the tank, the stand is to be stainless steel and finished with construction. The tank room is wide open, knowing that we want all the components in there. The client owns a local business, his own plane and between work and travel, he is out of town often so the system will need to be as automated as possible. He wants an 1,100 gallon +-, parrallelogram with 8' and 10' lengths, 4' wide and 4' tall (see attached sketch) that he wants viewable from the theater room but not necessarily the entire tank, just a portion framed out. Right now he is contemplating a reef but I think something of this size would be kickass with all the beautiful larger fish, nothing decided though.

This would make a cool "class project" for the club. Maybe we could have a contest and the winner's design gets constructed and we could have a prize. What are everyone's thoughts?

I wouldn't want it, the foosball table is too close to the pinball machine.

Ooooh I have a list of things that I would do and also many questions.

    1) Reef or not reef?

I'm thinking not reef = less maintenance -> fake corals -> smooth-on, etc

    2) Lighting. This one is easy. LED all the way. If not a reef system, then it's pretty simple.

    3) This is going to be an acrylic tank if you want this shape. Plus it's flippin huge. Plus drunken parties inevitably mean someone crashing into the tank. Here is a short list of the manufacturers that I would ONLY go to for quotes:

    A) James Steele, Envision Acrylics. Not the cheapest but it will DEFINITELY 100% for sure get built right.

Did I say that was a short list?

    4) Overflow system. If at all possible, I would to a BeanAnimal overflow system because of the dead silent operation (being backed up to a movie room) and failsafe operation (if gone for extended periods - this is a must). Also maximizes the footprint and doesn't muck up the back side of the aquarium.

    5) Dual return pumps: 1 main, 1 backup

    6) Top of the line controller with wifi for remote monitoring by maintenance company

    7) Auto Top Off system. Put together a relay panel or PLC to control an RODI system, including a holding tank which would fill when it gets below a certain point, controls to purge the membrane before water productions, etc. Then the top off water is fed from that to the tank.

For that matter you could do a PLC to control the whole system. Heck that's all a controller is, so just go with a top of the line PLC and make a control center. Seen it done by someone on here, now who was that....

I was thinking that too! It's going to be a heck of a bachelor pad. The foosball table reminds me of "friends" and the bikes on the wall remind me of "seinfield". It could use a trampoline though like on "Big".
