Do you run a ato along with a skimmer? This combo can lead to lower salinity levels over time! Learned that one the hard way! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif

That was before the WC. So I'm gonna do another water change today and see if I can get it raised. And I could try lowering them a few inches. Corals on the sand are mostly lps. I run an in sump skimmer and a gravity fed ato. I'm not sure how long its been that low. I'll be honest that tank hasn't been first priority lately. Kids stuff has taken over lol. I think I'll raise salinity up and if I don't see any changes I'll try dropping the lights.

I hear ya. both my tanks look terrible and could use a serious scraping. But life is life and fish and corals are happy so all is well.

I would watch the ATO with the skimmer, as overtime it will slowly shift down. The other side is if you let your salt rest or bubble for a period of time before you toss it into the system. That is more typically the issue than the ato and skimmer combo, but... in times where life gets in the way its easy to replace a few gallons through skim-mate without realizing it. Depending on system size that can be a quick few ppm!

If it's not really time for the WC, you can mix up a slurry of salt and tank or RO/DI and slowly add it to the sump to raise the salinity. Add a little to the sump, letting it mix in the sump water and go into the tank, then test...etc. You just don't want to add it or salt directly to the tank.

If you have problems keeping the salinity up due to loss from skimmate, there are a few different things which can be done. As stated above, mix your WC SW .001 or.002 higher(depending on loss between WC's) than what you would like it to be or, add a little to the topoff water. I personnally like the slurry as it is a slow and controllable method :0) After doing it a few times, you can get good at knowing how much salt to use for the slurry :0)

Great Advise Sponge! I like to drop my slurry down into the skimmer to make sure things will get a good tossing before anything settles! And Sponge is dead on, after a while, you will 'just know' how much salt you need to add on in.
