I just thought I would share with you guys in case anyone else found it interesting. I am very intrigued by buying as many of my future fish as tank raised specimens as possible. I'd read some info on the tank raised hippos, basically they are collected at the post larval stage and then tank raised. Still ecologically friendly, as only a small percentage of the fry survive to adulthood in the wild, and this leaves more of the larger survivors in nature. Also the resulting fish are supposed to be much less skittish and healthier since a tank is the only environment they know. So my latest mission was to try to find a place I could get one...
One of the companies thats producing them is willing to work with a local store to send me one...I'm incredibly excited! The store is not even a salt water store, but I can have it sent there and just pick it up right away when it arrives.
Hope everyone is having a nice day, atleast its not snowing!

That's pretty cool information Pam. I had no idea about that. I knew that there are some differences with survival rates on fish like banggai, but I didn't know that about the hippo tang. Thanks for sharing and good luck on your purchase!

Thanks! There seem to be a lot of "details" I need to work out, like the minimum order, etc. I should be able to get all the details next monday. If there's anyone interested in one just let me know, I may be needing to order 5 or 6.

The company is Sustainable Aquatics located in Tennessee.

    Take care, Pam

I'm going to call Monday morning to get more details. The gentleman at the fish store needed to find out from his manager exactly how the process will work. Once I get the details I will post them here. I'd be happy to organzie the details and work with the store. I'm very excited about the opportunity to have one, or two. (I'm wondering if I should keep atleast 2 for awhile to be sure atleast one survives, thoughts?) I'm looking at 2-3 weeks to have them come in.

    Thanks, Pam

If you go onto Petsolutions website and then into "Pick of the Reef" there's a write up on them. I spoke to John(fish manager for Petsolution) and got some details..They got 65 in and had only 1 die while in there tanks. He says these hippos aren't shy and like to swim instead of being shy.

Pam, please let me know what you come up with...we'd be interested in a couple as well

Awesome, that's cool to know. I always knew about captive seahorse breeding and their breeding statistics in the wild. In the wild they have >1% survival rate, but in captivity it's closer to

So the store that had thought they'd arrange the order is really not willing to. LiveAquaria.com has them each day in their divers den now, so I guess I'm going to get mine that way.

    Take care all, Pam

Petsolutions.com has them as well. Does anyone prefer one vendor over the other? Liveaquaria or Petsolutions?

    Thanks for the info, Pam

I've only heard great things about LiveAquaria and their willingness to stand behind their products. These are small fish (3/4" to 1"), I don't know anything about PetSolutions, so I would go with the one I had heard more about...Live Aquaria. Just my two cents.
