I have noticed, as many I am sure, that with this recent heat that the tank temp has gone up. What I would like to find is a way to cool it down without having to buy a chiller. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you, Shaun

Fans in your canopy to move heat from the lights away from the water, a fan blowing on the water in the sump (an ATO is a good idea if you want to try this). Maybe set the thermostat a little lower if you've got an air conditioner.

Keep your air turned down in the house is the best thing. I take RO water and fill a few ice trays and if it starts getting over 80 throw a cube or two in. Its called a poor mans chiller. Also heard of ppl taking a large bag of ice and floating it if it gets to dangerous temps. Just some cheap ideas to get you through this heat wave.

I have used all of the above methods and they have worked wonders for me. I hit 92 degres once due to a heater getting stuck on and was able to save everything minus a firefish.

One thing that I did was to fill a few 2 liter bottles with RO and freeze them. Put them in the sump when temps start to go up

I have an icecap fan and it works great.  It can easily pull the temperature down a couple of degrees on my 75 gallon tank.

Another thing you could do is shorten the amount of time your metal halides are on, save a little electricity and keep your tank cooler. I shortened my MH lighting period by 3 hours and haven't noticed anything different with the corals.

Thanks everyone. I did shorten the time for the lights. I had never thought of the ice cub thing before. I do have three Icecap fans on the main display and will be putting one on my sump when I redo it. But I have been able to keep it between 80 and 81 yesterday and today. Thank You all, Shaun

Another thing I have done is move my sump and add a 240 gallon tank to the basement where it is cooler. Haven't had a problem since then. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif
