Are you talking about the clownfish that was swimming vertical? Mine do that all the time. I just thought they were weird until I seen that.. I didnt notice the lionfish with the clowns..

One other thing I noticed that I wanted to ask is, on one of the episodes I seen a tank in the background that had a constant overflow of water on the outside of the tank, and I mean it looked like the tank was overflowing constantly... What is that?

zero edge tanks. the tank is basically set onto a tray with the drain tubes in the tray making a trough. the water fills the tank until it overflows being collected in the troughs

I don't want to start a argument here, I think the bitching about this show is a little ridicules. I like the show, I have talked with Bret and the General, and both seem to be really personal nice people. I will be touring their shop in July and meeting everyone. Its just a TV show, for entertainment, I don't think that its right to bust their balls on every episode. I do respect everyone's opinion either way, so I am just voicing my own.

Zero edge is basically for looks. Pets Playhouse had a few for a while. They are kinda cool, but have no real benefit. Just mainly for show

You guys are certainly entitled to your own opinions, and if you appreciate the show for entertainment purposes then that's fine I guess. I will take one moment to float the premise of my conjecture; the show has an excellent opprotunity to educate people on the importance of husbandry, design and expertise in the pursuit of aquarium keeping and raise awareness of the plight of wild reefs. However they focus on pushing reef aquarium as a toy, novelty, and as a status symbol, I find it insulting to the years of practice and expertise and education I've invested myself in and completely off kilter with the moral ideals that I promote in my endeavors. That's all, but not many people subscribe to my non-anthropogenic foundations of morality. I just think if your going to exploit animals for your own personal gains then you have some responsibility to give back in some way.

I've noticed they did make some changes to the show this season. They do state a couple times about using filtered water, the caution that needs to be taken matching water parameters when transferring fish. The importance of quarantine. Little stuff like that. I believe the hobbyists brought this change about. But because the show is filmed and cut for entertainment I don't think you will ever see a show that gets into the real down and dirty of building and maintaining a saltwater aquarium. If its not entertainment enough for animal planet, then its not going to make the show. I think some people forget that they have been building these systems for years. They were big before the show, now their name is just more known. I'm sure they do a lot more to make customers aware of the "job" of owning a marine tank. I'm sure they don't just set it up, dump in fish, and leave the scene. I would bet that their customers are more prepared for what they are getting into than someone that walks into a LFS wanting to set up a saltwater tank.
As for giving back someway. Do you know that they don't? It was my understanding they donated to Central Campus, and I am sure they donate to numerous other causes as well. Just because it doesn't make it in the show, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. In the industry they are in, if they don't give something back to help maintain the fisheries and the hobby, they are going to be hurting when they can't get their fish anymore.

I think they should stick to acrylic fabrication.

    Otherwise they should shut up.

And don't even get me started on their 'cutting edge' aquarium additives that they claim they developed through years of experience.

It's incredibly easy to blame someone and be envious of what they have (and these guys are lucky to have a lot). This isn't just with this show or this hobby. It happens everywhere, sadly.

This show isnt any different from any other show on tv, from the gold mining to the logging to extreme home makeover. The show is for ENTERTAINMENT!!!! They don't care if the average joe knows the proper salinity of a salt tank, or the proper acclimation of fish or coral...they care that the average joe goes ooohhh and aaahhhh when they show the end result. If anything this show will hopefully get the word out about the hobby and some of the more positive things happening in the hobby.

I didn't see the episode you are referring to, so I cannot really comment too much. I can say that I have seen other fishes in with smaller sharks in public aquariums before.

I will totally check that out.
Its cool guys, our hobby probably only has another good 20-25 years left in it anyways before the oceans are in such disrepair that it will become unthinkable to exploit reef animals for personal enjoyment, entertainment, or even education.

For someone not jealous or envious you sure are getting pretty defensive over the subject, especially when I wasn't specifically quoting you but responding about the climate in threads about "Tanked" in general.

Anyway, bowing out of this thread. Not much more I can add, and from personal experience this topic seems to bring out the inner PETA in everyone. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif
