I like the show and I will watch the show. It's actually the reason I went into saltwater from freshwater. I had been researching long before the show aired last season, but it put me over and made me start putting a tank together.

There is a great video with Brett and Mark Callahan you all should check out.

A couple thoughts of my own as I read the 4 pages of comments.

    1. I love the show, it is great. They don't show all the details I'd like to see, but then again, then show has to appeal to a wider audience than fish geeks otherwise it wouldn't survive.

    2. My wife loves the show. She has always "liked" our aquariums, but now that she has seen it she is encouraging me to get a bigger tank and has started making recommendations about what to put in it. This provides opportunities for conversation and education. The more she knows, the more she'll love it. And if she loves it, I get to do more of it.

    3. I have come to realize that with rare exception (the beer keg tank) the owner is not going to be the person maintaining the tank. If you notice, there always seems to be someone else there with a logo shirt that is not from Tanked. These are local aquarium maintenance companies. If you check out their website they list the companies in each state they work with. Neither they nor the owners do the maint. When you spend 30k-100k on an aquarium for your home or office, you are having someone else take care of it.

    4. I have wondered about them adding sharks with yellow tangs and such similar combinations. Sometimes I wonder if this is just for the show and not a permanent solution. Yes, they should be accurate in their pairing, but this is reality TV and entertainment trumps accuracy every time.

    5. Anyone ever notice how they will fill a saltwater tank with hose, then directly put fish in? I have to assume that is editing at play and not the real situation. They could do a little more to ensure that at least some of the basics are depicted. ( I know, that contradicts #4, but still...)

    6. I love seeing the huge tanks and dreaming that someday I'll have one 18 feet long and 6 feet tall.

Reality is what makes good TV? I think they are doing much better this year because of you Andy..I am sure that they wanted it to be better and just could not get that in reality on TV last year. I think its in there this year and can't wait tell the next Tank show up in May.

At MACNA they were talking about their own supplements that they use (and were supposedly developing for sale) that did all kinds of things like seeding the water (like Bio-Spira does, and to my knowledge that is about the only product I've ever heard of that actually does that) and other things that bind waste yadda yadda. I got on him about adding chemicals as a fix for the bioload problems but he had an answer for everything. You know how those guys are. Kind of like his answer for setting an acrylic seam and then putting water in the tank right away. He said "a few hours later it's done and (snaps fingers) you can put water in it". As Scotty once said, "You can't break the laws of physics man!"

Oh yeah and a little birdie told me that they don't get much business from the casinos anymore, because their tanks are (quote) "delaminating". My take on this (assuming here) is that since joints that are not fully cured (but strong enough to put water in, apparently) the seams absorb moisture faster than the acrylic panels which results in them turning 'foggy' or white, and while they will/may hold just fine, it certainly doesn't look good. I know one tank manufacturer that lets their joints on 1.5" material cure for 6 weeks before letting water even touch it.

Sounds like alot of hating & jealousy going on.

Considering how big they are, how many people they employ, and how long they have been around, they must be doing something right.

I am jealous of their success

It takes me two hours to watch a show because I always pause it to check out their facility. Incredible.

Awesome shop, there are ridiculous pieces of equipment in there......and the store part seems to be the coolest store I have ever seen. Huge. I think that is where they do their interview shots with the tank in back.

If anything I am jealous of Brett and Wayne's ability to wear sweatpants everyday with no sense of shame whatsoever.

Reality TV is only semi reality when you have producers telling you what to do and editing thereafter. We as hobbyist are not their target audience.
Did you see the pinball episode where they "broke" the glass? Watch it closely it was faked to add drama to the show. No actual shot of the thing hitting the floor and the arguing looked like a bad acting tryout. Didn't see any shipping labels on the box with last minute arrival of the extremely rare replacement panel either. (granted you couldn't see the whole box)

I think it's great TV and I love watching it but it is misleading to what is actually involved with the hobby and will surely cause a few wallets to be emptied and more used equipment for sale.
