So I have been leaning towards a large all in one tank but wanted to get feedback on everyone's tanks that have sumps in their stands. How noisy is it and have you had flooding problems? The all in one I wanted had a ridiculous price tag to begin with and I heard they are increasing their prices so I am looking at alternatives.

    Thanks!

correctly set up you shouldn't have a problem with flooding, and you can make them extremely quiet.

Its just a matter of choosing the right equipment, plumbing solutions, and other things to make it that way.

Mine was quiet. Most noise comes from the top side of the drains drains if you don't have anything to silence them. Do your research to learn from others mistakes. Under the tank is best use of space. If you have basement space you will be much happier to have space for maintenance.

My New 100g build: water flow is near silent to start with & with the doors shut I can only hear the soft soft vibrations from the pump. As far as flooding goes I sealed all around the bottom of the inside of the stand.. If the sump floods water only comes out the front of the stand. (Easy cleanup) All of my stand is primed & painted with oil based hi-gloss from sherwin Williams. I like my stand build because it lets me inside easily, plenty of clearance between the sump top and tank bottom as well!

How do you quiet down a noisy overflow? Or I guess what's the most quiet way to plumb it? I've got dual drilled 2" returns coming from an overflow box and it's pretty noisy. Like running water.

If they are just open pipe, you need gruves cut in the top of the pipe. I used my table saw set at 1" and that worked really well. Then you can put a cap on top with a vent hole for air syphon. And if you want to silence it further you can make a PVC capsule air silencer just like what your skimmer has. If you don't make a syphon hole there will be an occasional gargle of air getting pulled from under the cap through the gruves.

There are other ways. Herbie's are one.

I use the herbie! And you asked about silencing the water flowing into the sump: check out my photo, the 3/4" drain pipe is submerged into a larger capped 2" pvc pipe, so water is essentially flowing into a tube and being pushed out over the top and onto a platform tray with filter sock holes in it. This is the way to go if you want to use socks & have complete silence. [IMG]

Herbie is the way to go for silence, flow, and fail safe. I have one on my small tank and it rocks.

are you guys using homemade sumps or premade sumps? Can someone give me a definition of a herbie? When I had a sump, all my water drained to my basement and all I had was a tank with a bunch of rock in it, no filters, no baffles, etc.
if more people can post pics, I would appreciate it. I read about a bean animal sump but I am not drilling holes in the back of a tank.

    thanks!

I use home made or custom made to my needs. MJB tanks built my big sump out of acrylic. Him and I worked together on the design.
Herbie is similar to a bean animal drain setup only there is a 3rd pipe strictly as a fail safe. It will be an open standpipe just above the normal running water level and should not flow water under normal conditions. If there is an obstruction and water rises to the third standpipe it will drain and protect you from an overflow.

The tank I set up at Grove & Platt Dental in Grimes run a BeanAnimal drain and a custom sump (about 30g) and a Reeflo dart/snapper at 3000gph actual flow, dead silent. You don't even hear water movement in the sump with the doors open and there's only 15g in there when it's operating

Some water noise all part of having a aquarium. I have a 73 gal bowfront that isnt drilled. Using a hangon CPR overflow and a under tank sump. The parts the overflow came with made alot of gurgling. I googled and made a device with a pvc pipe with holes drilled in the side and a coupler slid over it so the water flows over the top and into the holes. Hole drilled in the top with a small piece of plastic tubing. Its quiet most of the time except when it cames some air. All is pretty quiet slight hum from pumps, the return hose was touching the sump and causing vibration, I put some foam around it. Id say the noisiest part is the wavemakers but I have probably too much flow, water sloshes pretty good sometimes.
