I wanted to do some checking around Cedar Rapids on what TDS reading people get for their tap water. Please post your reading if you would.

Reason is I found an old TDS meter laying around that I had bought a long time ago but had never used. I decided to test the waste water on my RO and was getting a reading of 14ppm. I thought that seemed far too low to be true so I tested my tap water and was getting readings between 52-58ppm.

Can this really be accurate? I know CR was recently voted best tasting water, but is our water really that clean or is the tds meter just junk?

I live on the NW side of town.

I am also on the NW side of town and tested my water with a TDS meter and got around 140-150ppm. Thats a rough guess, i havent checked it in awhile.

Those are readings I would have expected...My meter is probably junk. Although I am just across the river from the water treatment plant...maybe that helps?

I think figured it out now, I have to wait 30 seconds for the automatic temp compensation to work. After I let it sit out for a few minutes I got a reading of 117 ppm.

I also found my hannah meter (more reliable IMO) and tested the same glass of water with it and was getting about 180-190 ppm

Anyone using the intelliTEC meter below I would caution...

Marion water sucks. It is nasty tasting and even with a water softener I am getting 400+ (YES, over 400) on my water coming into the RO/DI unit. Coming out is a nice zero and I actually tested with 2 different meters and got the same results. Our water is terrible and the amount of water that I can get through the RO/DI unit is sad compared to how long the filter media lasts. I mean, I got about 200-250 gallons of clean water out of brand new filters, and then my DI resin is just about shot. Pathetic!

I know how you feel... our water in jesup was around 350-400ppm although it wasnt 'nasty', it was very hard water and would exhaust my DI out so fast I never even bothered using DI... Looking back though, I think a better RO/DI unit with higher water pressure would have made it much more efficient. At that time I was getting about 25-30 ppm after the RO. Here in Cedar Rapids using a Filter Guys unit I get usually between 1-2ppm after the RO /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif that makes me happy!

I have Well water and I have never tested my TDS when doing saltwater, but back when I did discus it was in the 400 range. I don't use and DI unit, but my TDS coming strait out of R/O is 4ppm.. I think that works great for me.

Just thought I'd chime in here. We are on rural water (Poweshiek). and our tap checks at 85. I'm using a TDS meter from airwaterice....

The way my RO was set up I am not going through my last carbon filter but straight from the membrane to the DI. Would I get more out of my DI if I ran it through the carbon first?

Yes I think you would! As it stands you are letting your DI filter what the Carbon would be.

You should be going strait from the RO membrane to the DI chamber. Carbon filters should be before the RO membrane. Here's a little info on filter arrays from our friendly guys at air water ice. http://www.airwaterice.com/category/18.filter_array/

    Mine runs
10 micron sediment filter > 5 micron carbon > 1 micron carbon > RO membrane > DI resin

I run my Ro/Di set up the same as above except that I have a 10 micron sediment pre-filter>5 micron sediment>2x 5 micron Carbon> RO> 2x Di. MY tap water TDS in Moline runs from 80-120. Now when I was in Phoenix the TDS was a minimum of 600 and after a rain storm it would jump upwards of 900-1000 TDS and that was hard on the filters.

I think I read the question wrong. I thought he ment there was no carbon filter at all. Reading things on mobile device is not good.. lol It goes like this sediment filter, carbon, membrane then DI.
