If that is what it is, then yes remove, QT, & treat carriers, and let it go fishless for 8 weeks.

But, unless you QT & pretreat every single live item that goes back into the tank, it may still always be there.

I have qt tangs for 2 months, only to see them pop up with something when introduced into a new tank.

I had one survivor from my encounter with velvet. Got him removed and he's in qt with chloroquine phosphate for 30 days (copper works against velvet as well). Going to let the display go fishless for at least 8 weeks although I'm going to try to hold out for 11 weeks to knock out ich as well.

Hypo and TTM apparently don't work for velvet so you'll want to treat with something. Velvet doesn't need to drop off the host during its lifecycle the way ich does which is the key to TTM.

What kind of sand did you use. I have read people use live sand and dry rock and nothing else in the tank and they got flat worms from the live sand could be a possibility not sure what the chances of that happen are just a thought.
Either way i feel your loss.

This sucks to hear Matt. Hope you can pin down what it was. Hopefully only good things from here on out.

I transferred about 150 pounds of liverock, but used plain dry Caribsea sand.

I am going to get the other fish out tonight or tomorrow and leave the tank fishless until next year. Maybe I'll add a few more corals in the next week so the fallow period will kill anything that can sneak in on them.

Some fish I won't be able to replace, but it is an opportunity to do something a little different and get some fish that I would have liked but either due to compatablility or tank size couldn't do.
Magnificent Foxface, Regal angel, a potters angel and maybe a pair of flame angels would be the fish I'd want. A mystery wrasse would be cool too.

At least there is something to look forward to.

Sweet fish list. I tried a flame angel once but had to trade it. My Acropora never had polop extension with the flame picking. And I wanted a clam.
But Angel fish are some of my favorites. Especially a Emperor. And gold flake
