As most off you know I lost my job and had to give up my tank a while back. Well now i am back to work and going to school and I am building another reef. This time it will be a 47 gallon tower style tank.
Right now I have the tank, a skimmer, lighting, LR, and a couple powerheads. I also have a HOB fuge that I can make work but am thinking about using a HOB overflow and setting up a sump.
I still have a bunch of planning to do and any input would be welcome. I cannot drill the tank as it is tempered.
Now for a couple questions. 1) can you run just one light on a dual ballast without damaging anything? 2) My live rock has been in saltwater but has a funky smell, should I recure it before using it?
     Thanks in advance, Shaun

Glad to hear you're back to work Shaun!
I've never noticed a funky smell coming from a healthy reef tank.  If it smells funky, there's a reason and I would cook it.
    Good luck!

+1 Cook it first. I got some micromacter 7 you can borrow to jump start the process.

OK. Today I took the rook out of the water it has been in for a while and was very surprised. I found Coraline algae growing, and ALL of the HA that had previously covered several pieces is completely gone. The rock just smelled like saltwater, it was the top layer on the water that smelled. The bad side was that I cracked the tub while trying to empty the old water so on hand I only had the tank that would hold all the rock. So I mixed up some more water and put it all in the tank with three power heads and a heater. I will regret this tomorrow as it has only been an hour and a half and the water is already getting a yellowish tint. Not worried though, I am not in a rush. I will do a 100% water change tomorrow and see how it looks. I will continue this until the rock is cleaned.
My scape will be a rock wall with one large piece up front and center. This should give me plenty of area for frags and fill this odd shaped tank well. Pics coming, Shaun

Well tests today showed zero ammonia and zero nitrites. Water changes to get nitrates down will now commence, May begin stocking it tomorrow or Saturday. Shaun

Well I got my clown in the tank. That was NOT fun to catch from my QT. I had to remove all the equipment to catch her. But she is in the DT now and seams to be happy. Maybe get a pic up later. It is swimming in and out of every single crevasse and cave in my rock work. Should be fun to watch. Shaun
