I started on the frame work of my 120g stand build, after getting the frame complete I am starting to wonder if 61 inches total height is going to be too much for just the tank and stand?
    1. Should I add a base plate ( 3/4 inch plywood ) that will add 5 inches to each side and add 10 inches to the overall bottom width and use round head carrage bolts to secure it to the bottom frame rail?
    2.  What is the proper height to width ratio I can not find one anywhere? I would assume it would be ( height / 2 = width ) assuming ½ the height would be an acceptable base?

What are you building the stand out of, and what plans are you following, if any? As long as you're building the stand solid that height is just fine. You have to remember all the weight is going to be going strait down through the legs. Just make sure everything is nice and square.
