I have a 50 gallon plastic drum that I've been using for a few years to hold RODI water.  It is fitted with an auto top off to the tank too, which is nice.  My problem is the water has been reading high on crud and smells a little musty.  My filters in the Typhoon III are brand new, so it's not that.  What are you guys storing water in to keep it clean and organism free?  I'd like something large and plastic.  The top is cut out and is just sitting on there, so dust and stuff can get in through the gaps.

I use a sprayer tank. It's sealed with a screw on lid that has a spring loaded pressure release valve on the top. I've never had any smells or discoloration. Before I used it, I cleaned it inside and out with bleach water, then regular tap water rinse. Now my saltwater mix tank has some build up inside...but that's to be expected. Why not try to make an acrylic lid that you can put on top if your plastic drum to keep stuff out? If I were in your shoes, I would just empty it, clean it with bleach water to disinfect it and kill anything that might be living in it, rinse it until the chlorine smell is long gone, then put it back to use. If the top is cut off in such a way that you can't use an acrylic lid, clean that up to a straight edge before you make your lid.

Just give it a good cleaning with vinegar when you empty it next and you will be good to go. I have the same problem time to time. Is it one of the containers you got from me?

I have a little 5g bucket next to my tank for my ATO. I have to refill it almost every morning with fresh water. Should I be worried about ickies growing in it? I don't have any sort of filter in the bucket, only the ATO pump

I use a 45gal rain barrel I got from the tractor supply store it has a sealed screw on lid like AJ and it works great. I cleaned it out when I first got it because it had kind of a weird smell but it has never been a problem. I think I paid about $40 for it.

I use the same thing, and have never had any problems.  I also have calcium dosed through my ATO, and my bucket is clean.  I think this comes down to having your ATO container close, so that no dust or anything else can get into it.

all great ideas.  I like the sprayer tank idea as I want a sealed lid.  This way nothing gets in that shouldn't be in.
Joe, not one of yours.  I got this from some kid in Adel years ago.  It smelled like vinegar when I got it.  Think that's what was in it originally.  Any good farm stores around the des moines area that would have one of these???

Then you got the tank from me cuz I used to live in Adel and that was me. I got it from a food supply place and it was used to hold vinegar. I can get some more if anybody wants some. They are very cheap.
