Got back from vacation today and my torch had 4 heads white and one had some brown on it. Removed it and cut off the bad parts, I still have 9 heads, mostly separated. Ive had this piece 9 months and always looked great. Nothing new has been added for at least 3 months. The bad pieces smelled VERY bad. What else should I do and what could have happened?

    Brown jelly, not good.

You need to get as much brown jelly off as you can asap. Even take a syringe & squirt it down into the skelaton. Then do a dip using lugols. Keep a close eye on it as it can kill LPS very very fast.

I broke off the bad heads and threw the whole piece away. How can brown jelly just all of a sudden appear. Fishies are fine Kylie, and if this turns out ok you have a torch coral!!! There are about 9 good heads.... hopefully. It figures it decided to strike while I was away.

It is a type of infection. They dont know the cause of it, just that it really sucks.

thanks. Ive been googling and there arent any real clear answers.  Ill keep an eye on the survivors  (hopefully). Its too bad I live out in the sticks as I would really prefer to have a "reefer" tank- sit for me. Probably would have been caught earlier.   And believe me, this stuff stinks, literally, I about gagged...

Of course I'd take the torch for you but that still sucks. Is this something that can spred to other corals? And how do you tell the diff between this infection and other brownish junk that grows? If its on rocks too is it not the brown jelly stuff?

1 piece w/3 heads looks promising. 1 piece w/1 head a definite maybe. The rest got thrown out this morning. Did about 30% w/c. My frogspawn is currently unaffected.[IMG]

I'm so sorry. Thats so little compaired to what it use to be. Had your torch been touching the frogspawn? Or are you just worried because it's lps too?

No its that I've read this usually only affects LPS, and the only one is the frogspawn...

Thanks for the post. I picked up a Torch last fall. It's already doubled in size. But, I didn't realize something like that could happen to them. If you learn any more about what causs that condition, please post it.

From what I'm gathering apparantly it starts with an injury. It wasnt as perky as normal when I left for vacation, came back 5 days later and 3 heads were skeletons, more were like brown jelly.  I have three heads left that may pull through. I don't know how it could have been injured, but I have 2 cleaner shrimp and a flame angel, although Ive never seen the angel nip anything....
