I'm starting up a 180 gallon tank. I'll be using a 40 breeder as the sump. I had the sump all laid out and ready to go for a traditional layout. Skimmer/fuge/return. Well I decided to give Triton a try. I cut the baffles out already. I'm running a MTC MVX skimmer external with a submersible pump to run it. I originally just had the pump in the first compartment of the sump. Now would it be ok to basically just have one huge compartment for the fuge then have it overflow into the return area and have the return pump and the skimmer pump both in that same compartment? Or should there be a compartment for the fuge, then skimmer pump, then another for the return pump?

I think you would be ok, may need to drain skimmer into filter sock so you dont get micro bubbles in main tank

I'm planning on dumping the skimmer back to the front of the sump at the beginning of the fuge area. Right by the drains from the tank.

Either way. I've done both and no issues. To be safe, you could do skimmer&baffle>fuge & baffle> return. Having the fuge sized like Triton suggests is important for the Triton Method.

With returning the water from the skimmer area back the fuge, you will be skimming twice?! Plus, when you do the fuge>skimmer> return, copepods/amphipods can/will be skimmed out. Best scenerio is Skimmer>fuge>return pump. Hopefully I have read your post correctly:0) If not, sorry:0)

That's exactly how I have my skimmer plumbed in my Triton layout. It pulls from the final section and drains back into the first.

That's good to hear. I figured it probably couldn't hurt to much. I cut all the baffles out the other day and changed it around.

Lol. I've run all my sumps likeTriton,
Actuary(Advice? - Acrylic baffles in glass sump) since the 90's I think. For some reason, I thought after the water went into the return section that it was being pumped/returned to the fuge again, thus being skimmed twice! Sorry! Having tje fuge area sized right with the macro is important
