Still true. I found a thread on Reef2reef regarding test results from Triton - by Randy Holmes. He made a reference to adding up the mg/l for sodium, Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium. Then salinity of 1.0264 = @12,900 mg/l.

FYI it takes about 2 weeks to get results and correct on what they don't test for.

Oops I just saw this. I am out of my Salifert but have the red sea one still. If you still want to test it I can just drop the kit off with you and you can have it, I never use it anymore.

It depends on when it is mailed( and the Postal Service)as to how soon the results are available. Samples are shipped out of Cali on Fridays if I remember correctly. They get the samples then on Monday. Of course when the samples are tested and posted depends on how many samples they receive from everywhere...several countries. Triton works as fast as possible as thet realize some people are needing the information as soon as possible due to tank issues.

Although not positive but more hearsay , we've heard that a testing facility may be in the US's future. They are very expensive to say the lrast.

Bud loaned me his Red Sea test kit and also Salifert test kits. The RS kit was slightly out of date, so I don't know how much that might affect results. Anyway, both measured quite a bit lower than my Salifert and close to the Triton result. So I'm going on the assumption that my calcium is low and raising it.

I really liked the RS test kit. It seemed that it might be less prone to user error and variations. So I have ordered it and will get it today.

@GoodGreef@GoodGreef - why don't you need your test kit any more?

So now, I am more unsure........

I received my RS test kit in the mail yesterday. I tested all 3 tanks using my Salifert test kit and the new RS test kit.

    So the final results are
    1) Water sample sent to Triton
Triton: 380; Out-of-date (Sept 2017) RS test kit: 390; My salifert test kit and new RS test kit - 420

    2) Test of current water in my 3 tanks:
My Salifert test kit and the new RS test kit are producing consistent results within 10 ppm of each other.

    What would you do?????

My suggestion is to pick which test kit you plan on using and stick with that. Then send another water sample in when you have gotten your water params/quality to where you want them. Then I would go with what Triton says and adjust your test accordingly. So if Triton says your new water tested at 420 CA and your test says it was 430, then you'll know your RS/Salifert kit is 10 off from Triton. We all know that our test kits are hobby grade and thus will usually not show lab grade levels. As long as the corals are healthy, thriving and are meeting your expectations, then it's all good:9) Maintaining consistency with what you want your corals to do/look like is the goal. Water testing such as Triton and the others are used for determining if your practices and products used are consistent and performing like you expect, if any unforeseen things may be present which may be toxic to the livestock, bacteria and things like that. When there are problems seen and large differences in results, then remediation can be done.

Maybe another example to try to explain the Triton's test is, one of my systems' tested to have unwanted heavy metals. I have followed Triton's recommendations to correct the presence of the heavy metal. When I send another test back in, then what I did will determine if I was successful in finding and eliminating the heavy metal source. If yes, great! If no, then maybe it's something that I'm still not finding such as a piece of equipment polluting the water, something that I'm using regularly (like a trace element product)...things of that nature. I hope this has helped........

I just received my Triton results and my biggest surprise was calcium. A little disappointed with how far off I was on potassium as well. Not quite so concerned about iodine since it's at least off in the safer direction.

    PO4:
    0.00 ppm - Hanna
    0.0097 ppm - Triton

    Ca:
    430 ppm - Salifert
    481 ppm - Triton

    Mg:
    1425 ppm - Salifert
    1436 ppm - Triton

    I:
    .03 ppm - Red Sea
    0.0000 ppm - Triton

    Fe:
    0.00 ppm - Hanna
    0.0033 ppm - Triton

    K:
    455 ppm - Red Sea
    407 ppm - Triton

    Salinity:
    34 ppt - Refractometer
    33.5 ppt - Calc'd with Triton results

I also tested for NO3 (0.0 ppm Red Sea) and alk (126 ppm Hanna) but don't have Triton comparisons.

@Actuary@Actuary - I think that we need to get together and review/perform a couple calcium tests. I find it very interesting that your Triton results were @50 higher, whereas mine were @40 lower for calcium - both of us using Salifert test kits. I'd like to do a comparison with both of our kits on the same water, side by side and see the results. Are you coming to Frag Fest on Sunday in Williamsburg?

I've got the Red Sea potassium test kit and hate it. I found it too difficult to determine the end point.

I also looked back at my results from 6 months ago and saw that the Triton results were 60 ppm higher than my Salifert kit. Unfortunately I won't be at Williamsburg but I would be up for trying out the test kits on the same sample at some point.

I also don't love the Red Sea potassium test kit but I would say it is vastly better than the Korallen-Zucht kit that was the only option on the market for a long time. Are there any newer alternatives that you know of?
