So they've not even been in my tank 2 weeks but I can tell they aren't going to be staying there on a permanent basis. The 3 Blue damsels are harassing the two yellow tails (One has a mark on its side and a chunk out of its tail). I was hoping they had enough space and rock they'd all just play nice and I could then add the fish I wanted...guessing thats not the case. I "think" I will be able to catch them as they come right up to the top when I feed. Trying to decide if I can leave the yellow tails or if they will be a problem in the future too. Its a shame, they're fun fish to watch, but I certainly didn't spend all this money, time and effort to have only damsels, LOL. And I'm thinking the one yellow tail is getting picked on too much, and probably will be in trouble before too long, so I'm trying to decide if I should make a trip to return the blue ones sooner rather than later. But don't know what pulling them out will do as far as whatever type of cycle my tank is in. (Ammonia/Nitrites 0, Nitrates 10-20) Oh how I wish I'd have just stuck with my plan of the chromis to begin with and not listened to the fish store on the damsels, they said Chromis wouldn't survive the cycling, but I don't think my levels did enough to have been a problem...
So in summary everything I've read is right, Damsels=Bad; even if they are pretty!
Should I pull them out now and get chromis, or clowns, or leave them and wait awhile longer? (Oh and I also have small kids who have named the little darlings even though I cautioned them they probably wouldn't be our permanent fish...)
I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend, and are enjoying watching your tanks since the weather lately is just horrid!
    Thanks again, Pam Speck
Oh and in case it matters regarding whether I should keep the Yellow Tailed Damsels my current plan for fish long term is
2 clowns (1 B/W 1 Regular Ocellaris) - I'd have 2 of each if they would get a long long term...
1 Royal Gramma (depends on what I do re: the damsels)
    1 blue tang
    1 yellow tang
and someday (ie when my tank is truly mature, etc) hopefully a Flame Angel

If my knowledge serves me correct, the B/W clown and the Regular one will not get along. You will only be able to have one or the other of the species, but you can have a pair of one or the other, or even a trio.

I thought since they were both Ocellaris Clowns that if introduced at the same time they would work? I could definitely be wrong though as I'm only going by what I've researched online, and have no real knowledge. Anyone else know, or has anyone kept the two together by chance? If not I guess we'll stick to the regular ones, have to have a "Nemo" with 4 year old twin girls! And yes I'm probably your worst nightmare wanting to have a fish from the movie, but in my defense I'm am trying to research and do things right, but I must confess that Nemo and Dory will be residents of our tank!

Yea kids go nuts over stuff like that. I might be wrong too, but you never know, someone with more experience will hopefully chime in.

You don't mention how big your tank is. A bigger tank *may* work. Can you take the blue damsels back to the pet store where you got them? I'd try that option first. The only luck I've had in managing aggressive fish is to get bigger or more more aggressive fish to keep the other hoodlums in line /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif Always, always research and ask people (not salespeople) about tank inhabitants before adding them........I'd keep the yellowtails; they're a nice peaceful fish from my experience w/ them.

Thanks all! My tank is a 90, the LFS will take them back, so they'll definitely be going back. They sold them to me to cycle with and said to bring them back, so thats not an issue. I've been having the net in the tank while I feed, they swim all around it so hoping that catching them won't be too hard!

Good luck with catching them!  I had a yellow tail blue that I used for cycling and it was bullying a snowflake eel I added later.  Of course the damsel mysteriously disappeared one night and the snowflake claimed innocence. [IMG]

you will probably have to move all your rock around and stuff to catch them. and you dont have to wait for a mature tank to have a flame angel. atleast i don't think you do. my tank wasn't mature at all, maybe a few months and my flame has been doing fine for over a year. "dory" will get to be quite big and with it and a yellow tang i'm not sure if a 90 would be enough room or not...thats just me though. i'm really not sure

Pull the rock and remove the damsels - if you don't do it now, you will later when the tank has grown in.
Chromis, although damsels, don't seem to ever get aggressive.
Clowns, all of which should along, don't seem to be aggressive towards other fish but they will mercilessly attack you whenever you have your hands in the tank as they age.
My yellow tail wasn't the most aggressive - but it did like to stir the sandbed several time a day which is why it was removed.

I have read about instances where having these two paired doesnt work but I have also read about as many instances of it working out ok. No idea what the factors are that determine it working or not, my nephew has two onyx (they are only 3/4" - 1" long) and a reg false perc female in the same tank and they love each other. His female is full grown and has about the neatest personality of any fish I have ever seen, she is really playful and friendly unless you are a woman and stick your hand in the tank : )

Caught all 3 blue damsels today and returned them to LFS. No problem netting them while feeding so that was good. I did feel bad about taking them back, they're pretty fish, but I didn't want to be risking any new fish I get. I left the two yellow tails for now (both of whom got netted while I was trying to get the others), if they behave they can stay...for now I'm sure they're glad to not get chased mercilessly from the blues, LOL!

I was travelling to Chicago today for business and stopped at Corralville Bay fish store, seems like a nice store.
