Does anyone use these in the iowa area?
What I call a utility tank is a smaller tank, typically about 10-20% of your dt, that is plumbed into your system with a quick release to issolate it from your system.
During normal operation the utility tank, in my case, is a dsb that is used to grow macro and micro algeas under 24 hour lighting. Using the space as a biological filter and having the ability to quickly remove the system from the main filtration you have the ability to isolate fish or corals into a quick issolation chamber with little extra stress from acclimation to an active issolation tank. Which can often come in handy especially in tanks with aggressive fish or corals.
I'll throw a pic up in the morning for a visual reference. But does any one use a similar system?

I'm picturing a supped up sump. I have mangroves in my sump. Will be adding cheato once I build a chamber for it and swap out my sump tubs. But I also picture a QT tank that has additional filtration the DT can use when not out of service for hospitalization of coral or fish. Sounds cool. Pics please!

So here she is! Finally back up and running. So long and short of it this tank is essentially a display refugium. Its plumbed into the sump intake past the skimmer and drops it back right intothe filter sock. Pumps about 200-250 gph from the main system and runs a fluval 206 filled with carbon on itself. So another 200 gph or so internally. The tank is set up with a buncb of macro algeas to filter out extra nutrients. dual cfl run 7 to 10 and a single t8 50/50 runs 24/7. Its a great tank in that if anything in your dt goes south you can cut off the utility tank and toss it in as a quarenteen with little to no acclimation. Great for coal frags to keep pesky nippers away after fresh cuts. Awesome for water changes and also great as a specimen tank for things like mantis shrimp. The also make amazing pod farms. If I chake that chaeto in the tank it explodes!
    Thats a 10 on my 75 and my 40 has a 20.
