So I was wasting time and stumbled across a post on the internet about people taking care of high nitrate by adding vodka or sugar in small doses for a couple weeks and it did miracles on the nitrates. I dont have a problem with my tank but did awhile back and many many water changes later it's good. But my question is has anyone done this or heard of it? I would really like to know where they go and if they just come back because they didn't get removed threw a water change. I just thought I'd see what the rest of the club has heard or thought about it.

Its carbon dosing. Vinegar dosing, and even biopellets are really the same principal. Introduce a carbon source to maintain a higher population of nitrifying bacteria. Lots of info can be found about carbon dosing and the various methods of doing it.

I plan to start vodka dosing to see what it does for my tank, I just haven't got around to setting it all up yet.

I'm nervous to loose any coral or fish as you know it don't take much to have hundreds/thousands in a system. So I tend to stick to the right/proven way. But some home remedies could be life savers in some certain cases. Just find it interesting how people come up with stuff like that.

Iv been dosing for years now.One of the best things iv done.
    10ml every night.
U will still need water changes tho.Just not as much.
    Large skimmer is suggested too.

I dose vodka for a year now, I love it. I have mine setup with drew's doser from BRS and a timer to dose 3x a day. It has been the best single equipment addition I have bought.

I started using Everclear 4 weeks ago. Before then I was always running 15 gallons of per week to keep nitrates down. After a water change Sunday I was at 5ppm and todays nitrate check was undetectable. Looking forward to skipping a water change this weekend.
I have read that it reduces phosphates as well, at this point have yet to see a change from .25ppm though I have not had issues with phosphates jumping at this point.

    1ml 150 proof/day in 55 gal w/ live rock & 2" sand & crushed coral bed.
    young yet healthy coral
    active inverts and fish.

I was skeptical as well, but have been happy w/ the results.

A long time ago, I started carbon dosing with biopellets. After 6 months with no progress, I switched to vodka. Again NO3 and PO4 didn't budge; just got alot of cyano. No way was I going to do sugar, Went to vinegar and have good results. NO3 at a steady 2.0-2.5 ppm for all my tanks. PO4 less also but still use GFO and, LaCl3 on the DT. NO3 is reduced about 3 times faster than PO4. All my tanks are dosed throughout the day using a doser ;0)

Several years ago when I had problems with nitrates I dosed vodka for several - maybe 6 months. It did a good job. Lowered my nitrates. The nitrates got down to an acceptable level and I was able to stop dosing.

Vodca dosing is safe when done right. I have been dosing small amounts of vodca for about 12 yeats now. The idea is organic carbon are used as biofule to accelerate free floating bacteria I the water column. I use a dosage of 1 ml oer 20 gallons as a base. Yiu will need a skimmer keep in mind. And will need to clean your gkass more often. But my sps always look beyter when I dose vodca. And have never had an issue with fish inveterts or corals whilst doing so. I have gone many many months at a time doing every other day dosings.
Typically I do a one week of everyday dosing. Then Settle I to every other day. Tank gets nice and dirty. And filters get changed sooner. But never have I had a issue with nitrates.
