Advice? Water changes

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by ChapmanFM, Oct 11, 2017.

  1. First off i should state I am not having any problems. I have had my 125g up for years and I do 10g weekly water changes. Im just curious how often and how much everyone else does.

Right now I do about 20 gal a month on my 90 gal. I had been doing about 8-10 gal a week on it but I've gotten busy lately.

I do 3 gallons a day on my 300 gallon tank and never touch a bucket.

We do about 10% every other week on our 300 & 210 (one tank per week).

Hopefully I don't start a riot... I don't do any regular water changes on my 400g. I send in a water sample for testing at Triton Labs every few months and nothing ever stands out.

What do you have or use for filtration?

I don't do water changes unless something is looking off. I suck out detritus and run it through a piece I made with filter floss. I dump it back in after it is filtered. I dose as necessary to keep my levels where they need to be. It started as an experiment with a Pico reef that I had, and now I have moved the concept to my larger tanks. Removal of detritus, macroalgae, protein skimming, and dosing are how I keep my tanks going. I rarely actually make new water.

  12. 10 gallons weekly on a 30 gallon tank. Hang-on filter and a teeny-weeny protein skimmer. Don't dose or add anything else.

I have chaeto in my fuge and a 76" tall skimmer. No filter socks but I will occasionally put a pad of filter floss in my sump. I also run GAC and GFO.
