I was just curious if your water can be too clean? By that I mean I'm doing water changes on my 40B once every week and a half to two weeks and change usually around 10 gallons... I know, probably excessive right?! But I haven't had any problems and my reef is thriving and doing great! Just curious if this might be excessive??

Additionally, I don't add any additional nutrients to my tank (never have don't think I'll ever need to) since the water changes usually keep it going smoothly and never have any issues with water quality or nutrient levels... Let me know if you guys think this is excessive for such a small tank, changing 25-30% of the water twice a month. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/ermm.gif

As you can see, I don't have any issues growing the reef, just am curious if anyone would think it would do better if I change less of the water more frequently, or more of the water less often...?

It's been up and running for almost two years now, bought it off of KPotter in October of 2011... Thanks again Potter!

Also, I have a scooter blenny, two clowns, and a six line wrasse, thinking about getting either a flame angel or mandarin goby... Any suggestions???

I do about 5 gallon water change every two weeks on my tank. I don't add any extra additives either. And my fish and corals are doing really good. I really like the flame angel however i settled on the flame back and really like him. Super active and goes in and out of all my rock work.

  4. I don't think that you are doing an excessive amount of water changes. I do 10 gallons every week on my 70 gallon and I have never had issues and I have excellent growth. As for the new addition to the tank I would only recommend getting a mandarin goby unless you are absolutely positive that you and an over abundance of copepods in your tank. You may want to consider ordering some live ones online if you really want a mandarin. I have had mine for over 2 years, he eats off my live rock all day and I feed him brine shrimp every 3 days. They are beautiful fish and fun to watch.

Not excessive at all. The more the better IMO. I bet if you started slacking on WCs you'd start to see algae growth.

I've got two different t5 lights- one is 28"- 4 bulbs, 2 atinic 2 10,000K, and another t5 36" with one atinic and one 10,000K that I turn on when I remember to plug it in. Otherwise there's too much light in my tank and algae begins to grow...

I'm pretty sure I have an abundance of copepods, but I also have two cleaner shrimp that tend to keep them under control. I have had baby shrimp swimming around the tank but am just getting my 20 gallon sump set up today finally so hopefully it will be able to balance my tank out a little better... maybe be able to keep some of those baby shrimp alive for more than a day rather than just have them be free fish food.
