I had a conversation this weekend with someone who's been in the hobby for a long time (not in GIRS). He mentioned that RO can be stored for quite awhile without issue of bacterial growth...weeks. But, once the water is mixed with salt, it should be used within 24 hours....reason is that bacteria begins to grow in the container....however, I thought I've read posts about people keeping ready/mixed saltwater. Opinions / thoughts ?????

If that is an issue, I didn't know about it. How does it differ from storing saltwater in an aquarium? What specific kinds of bacteria are of concern?   I try to keep my mixing tank filled with between 30 to 65 gallons.  When it gets down about half way, I add more water, salt and dial it in to the proper salinity.

I've read posts where people who store salt water can do so for a while. As long as it's circulating by air pump or something.

I've read a few posts on this and from what I'm reading, it seems like as long as you keep it heated, circulating and covered, you should be OK. The main concern is the loss of calcium and trace elements to calcification in the tank.

I do keep salt water and have done so since I started. It's kept in a 33 gallon food safe garbage can.
i do keep it heated and have a powerhead in the tank to keep water circulating. The only issue i have had is that i have had brown slime build up every six months. i simply rinse the tank and start over.

I couldn't say "what" bacteria is of concern. The difference between storage and the tank (I would assume) is the fact that the tank has live rock....with the "good" bacteria to keep the "bad" in check....ok, have I given awy the fact that I'm not a chemist !! I had never heard this type of concern....but, I did notice the following....normally when I do a water change, I mix/heat/circulate for 24hrs (+/-). However, my last water change - yesterday - the water was in the tub for several days - got interrupted last week by work demands. When I pulled the pump out of the tub, I noticed that the housing and cord are a little slippery / slimy...nothing visible, but definitely "something" was going on...never had that when I mix for 24 hrs....which gave credibility to what I was previously told about bacterial growth.....or, maybe it's all just no-big-deal. I used the water yesterday...I'm way too cheap to throw it out...unless I know for certain that it's a problem....thus the question

this i an interesting read because typically i have a closed 5gal jug of salt and fresh water on hand for top offs and changes. I guess i need to start getting my water just prior to my changes to prevent bad things from happening.

I have a fitting with a clear tube on my RO/DI container
that I use for filling up containers. I have a ball valve on this
fitting, but usually I just stick the tube in a hole in the lid to make
it easier. Every time I pull that tube out it is a little slimy also,
so I know this isn't something that just happens when we add salt to it
because it does the same thin on my purified RO/DI water.

Does anyone know what this slimy stuff is?

I have never had any problems storing mixed saltwater. In fact I never use it until it is mixed at least 24 hrs preferrable 2-3 days before adding to my tanks. Regarding the slime on the pumps I get the slime on my tubing in my my RO water that sits in a 30 gal container. Also they sell bottled saltwater in the fish stores. I wouldn't have any concerns about storing saltwater.

You make some great points about properly aging the water.  I also heard that aerating it is good for it too since your RO/DI filter strips all the excess oxygen out.  I need to read more on those topics...don't know much about that.  If anyone has some good resources on this, it would be appreciated.
