If you can't find anything used I can vouch for the Jebao pp pumps. I put a pp-4 on a 29g and didn't have too high of expectations. I was blown away with how much water that tiny powerhead can move... it does a great job of creating a standing wave by itself as well. I was impressed enough by them that I bought four PP-20 powerheads for my 400g... they move so much more water than my four Vortech MP-40s at a fraction of the price (albeit they aren't quite as pretty).

Given that your tank is 48" vs my 29g which is 30" I'd probably go with the pp-8 or two pp-4s on opposite ends.

Like @Actuary@Actuary I've got the Jebao pp-4 pumps, 2 of them, in my 65gal running about 2/3 power and they've been great. I use the 'Else' setting for some more randomized water movement but if I set it to the wave or sine modes I can easily get water sloshing out of the tank. If you're looking for more than 1 I bought mine in a pair off of eBay and saved a couple of bucks.

Yikes.. what's going on there? Sudden bacterial bloom? Vinegar overdose?

The wp lineup was jebao's first generation powerhead. The next generation (rw) seemed to have some improved reliability and now the third generation (pp) seems improved again. Even if you have to replace them every couple years they are still a fraction of the cost of a vortech (which you still have to replace the wetside every few years on).
