Ok so long story short i hate living in town so I found a house out of town where all i see is corn, horse and buggies, as well as all the stars i want at night. Of course looking at my tank im thinking crap well water must be a TDS factory. So im wondering if anyone has used well water with a RODI unit and how that worked for you? Did you go through filters like crazy? Was it worth it in the end to use the RODI? Or should you just buy at at the store? Thanks for the help and advice!

I have been on well water for years. Much better then city water. No chlorine, fluoride, etc

@xroads@xroads so do you go through filters alot faster or is your tds lower than most? I know pretty much every well is different just seeing if it's still worth making my own water

I have well water works great I just run a pre-filter and you might have to check your water pressure

Every well is going to be different, depends what's in the ground around you. All are likely to have a lot of minerals and some metals in them, some may have a lot of nitrates. Also likely to be some herbicides and pesticides in it. I would have it tested to make sure it is safe for you!....and I would still probably just hook up a RODI and see how it goes. Can't beat having usable water for your tank on tap, buying water sounds like a pain......And I'm way jealous about you having a place in the country!:)

Also there might be a different requirement for well water when it comes to RO membranes. You will want to talk to someone who knows that they are talking about in this respect. Ask specifically if they are familiar with using RO on well water.

  8. MadManMadrid,
I just moved here from AZ but when I lived there I used to go to the Spectrapure factory a lot to buy things direct. Given they specialize in water making machinery (we know them as aquarium specialists but their overall business is quite huge) they are really quite genius at that type of question.
It's not like I know anyone there but to Turbo's comment, if you are looking for experts in the RO/DI/membrane world they have proven to me they are.
Might be worth calling them and checking it out. I don't know anything about well water but have 2 litermeters and a maxcap RODI90 from them and they have been great to work with.
Hope it points you in the right direction!

As others have stated before...every well is going to be completely different. I have worked on hundreds of wells overy the last couple years and not one of them is the same. I have worked on some that are artesian and can produce better water than man/factory can make and I have worked on some that you wouldn't catch me drinking from no matter how good it was filtered. A lot of variables when it comes to wells... where it's drilled, how new/old, material of the casing, how deep /which water table your water is being pulled from, quality of soil in the area, etc... some can be very very high in nitrates, iron, and bacteria right out of the hole. Your best bet is to get a water test done...find out where you stand and then send those readings to one of the rodi places and they can steer you in the right direction. I would get a water test first though as they wouldn't /shouldn't be able to tell you much without knowing what they need to remove.

Ok awesome ill call around see when I can get it tested. I'm kinda curious as well whats in the water. The area around i have one brought across the street they are Amish and its a dairy factory. I can handle the cow smell but hog would definitely be a different story. Thanks for the input everyone!

    how old is the well?

State law says it has to be tested when installed, so if it is less then 10 years old, you can probably find the report

Usually just have to worry about iron, nitrates, phosphates, which is easier to take out then chlorine, fluoride, and all the other nasty stuff cities add to it.

I haven't tested my water but was warned well water can have high disolved co2 which is really hard on di. My system has dual membranes even. Filters are only a couple months old.

I have well water and it TDS readings are better than local city water. I get very good prefilter and membrane life but CO2 is high and I used to go through DI very fast. I added an open air RO storage tank about 6 months ago with an air-bubbler to reduce the CO2. I am getting significantly better DI life now. I used to go through about 1 DI canister per month, and now I can probably go 4-6 months.

Interesting i didnt know that about CO2 cool no2 i do. So if i start buying resin fast thats probably the reason why.

Currently I just don't have the space to do a storage container and air stone but will look into it.
