One of my buddy's wellsophilia brain has not been doing so well lately. (so we think) I don't know much about these things and I don't know if this action is natural from time to time. The brain has been doing pretty good for him until just recently it curls up, almost like its trying to suck its flesh back in. His parameters seem to be great and doesn't really have any fish that would nip or pick at this coral. Heres a picture just let me know what you think thanks.

Some of that is quite normal, especially if it's cyclical. They reduce their surface area to detach from the slimy membrane they secrete, thereby facilitating removal of the biofilm (and associated waste products therein) by wave action. This picture doesn't look bad, normal really, but they are prone to starvation and will become prone to sit around in this deflated posture for weeks prior to death as the skeletal ridges begin to show.

how about thoughts on feeding? I don't direct feed it. Should I be? I feed cyclopeez as well as a variety of frozen flake and pellets.

You can direct feed but it is not necessary. If you want to feed your LPS look in to the food Cherry Corals sells. Great stuff and you can the reaction of LPS when you place the pellets in the mouth.

As for the brain it self. If you are worried about it try moving it to lower light. What type of light are running?

For food I feed Fauna Marin food from Cherry coral once or twice a week and I feed mysis at the same time usually for my other corals. My Brain get all colored up and the tentacles really come out when I use the Fauna Marin. If you want I could give you some to try since you are in ames.

Ok, one at a time! Lighting is a pheonix 250W metal halide. There are 3 of them. I am not sure lighting is an issue. I think this might be normal behavior because it has been really extended or whatever, it looks happy and is stretched out. Matt, I would love to meet you and see your set-up and have you out to check mine out sometime. It would be fun to see it react to the food. I havent really noticed its tentacles out. But I have heard that happens at nihgt alot. Thanks for all the responses.

Just let me know a time sometime this week maybe. I work till 6 in Ames so I could bring some buy for you to try. My setup is just my 29 bio-cube with LEDs mostly blue right now, but I know that its hard on them if you just got it and it needs to get used to your lights, but good food and water params help with that. I can tell that my water is getting crumby by how my brain reacts it will stay small if the water is crappy, and when I change it, it immediately gets bigger.

I have had one for over 8 years now. They can definitely be touchy and a little hard to figure out why they do this. What Andy says is correct they do this from time to time and it seems to be normal. But some people have lost theirs when they have done this. I have always done what Gered mentioned and have kept it going every time thus far (know on wood), moved it under a rock shelf for lower light. Those bulbs are pretty new I think Sean and you didn't mention color temperature. But Phoenix bulbs runs hot anyway and tend to burn things if I remember right. I have never really target fed mine but occasionally.

So I believe this process must have been cyclical (if that is the right word). Or better put possibly a process the wellso was going through. Today it looks as good as it ever has in my tank.
