So I'm upgrading my 29 to a 40 breeder hopefully soon. I'm just in the planing stages for the sump as I have never had one and am not entirely sure what I will all need. I'm planning to just use the 29 for the sump. I have a HOB skimmer that I plan to continue using but on the sump and not on the display tank. Other then that I'm totally lost. Any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thanks

What do you want to include in the sump? Skimmer and return obviously, but do you want any kind of refugium? Deep sand bed? Bioball chamber? What about reactors for carbon, gfo, biopellets ect?
I haven't been in saltwater that long - 4 years now- but it didn't take me long to realize there are a million successful ways to run a reef tank. Also about as many unsuccessful ways too.
Most people will divide the sump into 3 chambers. Have the overflow area with the skimmer, a return area, and a third area for "other". You just need to decide what equipment best fits how you want to run and maintain your reef. Then design a sump to fit your needs with the chosen equipment.

I would like to have a refugium. What seems to be the best way to set one up. I would at some point like to have reactors but probably not right away as I will need to build up the cash first. Also need to keep in mind the amt of space I will have to work with as it will be a 29 standard tank for the sump. Unless I can find another 40 breeder really cheap.

I have also been in the world of salt water for about four years as well. But my tanks have been smaller biocubes. And my current 29 standard tank runs with just a hob skimmer and an aqua clear filter but I run chemipure elite in both tanks. The new 40 is already drilled which is what I wanted.

Is there a good instructional site to show instructions on how they would be set up. I'm totally lost on how they work. I will plan to set up three sepereate chambers. Do I have to use glass or can something else be used? Maybe I'm better off finding a used sump? I'm not good with tools nor is my husband for that matter. Lol

Depending on what return pump you have you could save a ton of room by running it external. If you were closer Id gladly help. Its pretty simple once you do it. Idk of any good sites to help you but can send you pics of my setup. Its a simple 3 compartment sump. 515-661-3537.

I do not have a return pump yet. I will need to find one. So if anyone knows of anyone selling one that would be great too. I just don't want to buy anything yet until I actually have the tank.

Glass is the best material to use to separate the chambers as it will give the best strength and bond using AQUARIUM SAFE silicone. I would get your equipment before doing any type of siliconing in the the sump though. That way you know exactly how everything will fit in there so and you have the necessary room in each chamber.
Its really not hard at all. Cutting the glass for the baffles would be the hardest if you wanted to try that. I prefer to order mine cut to size, then all I have to do is silicone it in. I can drill glass, but I have never had luck cutting it.
I'd be more than happy to help you out, and I'm sure other members would be too. Just let us know what you need help with.

Well lets start here. What size sump do most go with to fit under a 40 breeder but still allow enough room to get into things? I know the bigger the better because then you have more room for things. But I honestly don't know how big I can go. I also don't have a ton of money to spend on getting a sump together. I may be having to search for a new light too if I can't use my current light since the new tank will have a canopy. I'm feeling very overwhelmed at this point.

I may just have to wait until next month sometime when I get my bonus from work. I want it done right and to do that I know it costs money. Esp since I won't be able to cut the glass myself. I have no problems using aquarium silicone to glue the glass in place. But I would need help with knowing where to glue them at correctly. I will also need help with all the plumbing. And I will need someone patient enough to show me how to do it all.

If you already have the 29 gallon, I think that would work just fine for you. Assuming that is a 30" long tank there should be more than enough room to divide it into 3 sections and fit all the equipment you need.
I'm jamming all the equipment for my 46 bowfront into just a 15 gallon sump.

I believe the 29 I'm currently using is a standard. I don't believe it is a long. And if my light doesn't fit I may just sell the stand tank and light to help fund the sump.

It truely does just depend on what you want out of it. I have always loved having space for macro algae's as they tend to do wonders for excess nutrient levels, and they feed my tank inhabitants as needed as well. Full circle--natural! [IMG]

    15g sump (manufactured) under a 90g

Could be something as simple (although I recommend larger for sure!) as this 5g under a 20g Tall. Literally has the drain into the sock filter, goes through floss and returns.

Or here is a 20g L under a 75g tank that we put in glass baffles (that we cut ourselves... not really that hard to do). The skimmer usually sits in the space right infront of the heater there, so that void is filled. This was built to fit in with aquaclear 500 sponges in the system... one of my alltime favorite sumps we built.

OK AND IN CASE THAT WASN'T ENOUGH FOR REFERENCE FOR YOU, and your not totally bombarded already here's a diagram with discriptions to help you get "un-lost".... [IMG]

You can find several more photo's on my facebook group if you want more ... lol. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/320720081395752/)

A 20 long would be ideal imo
