To anyone who doesn't have a fancy overflow box but instead has a pvc stand pipe in their aquarium, what do you use to guard your pipe opening so fish don't swim in. I'm currently using the guard available on Drs. Foster and Smith and it works well at keeping fish out but gets blocked easily and slows down flow to my sump even when unblocked. Any suggestions?

Are you using the screens? I have been messing with this idea for a while and have used it for some small projects but pretty much you take a cap of the same size pipe and use that. I will draw it up quick how I have done it and explain it a little better.

Ok this is a rough drawing but I hope you get the idea.  Pretty much you cut a gap out of the bottom of the cap leaving 2 legs or you could do more but I do 2 because its easier.  Dremel works best for this I have found out.  Caps are usually pretty cheap so you can play around with this.  I have played around with a few different designs and this one works the best.  You can then use PVC glue to attach the legs to the 90.

Thats a really neat idea. Do you drill a hole in the top also? Seems like it would possibly flow better if there was somewhere air could escape. I'm going to play around with this idea and I'll let you know what I come up with /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

Id drill a hole is top so that it makes it little more silent, or that most likely would not flow well and would be annoying. It would be easy to make with a dremel.

I was thinking about taking that idea and making more slits above and below the first, having the legs alternating 90 degrees. That should allow more flow yet still protect the fishes from swimming in /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

i use the strainers from glass-holes.com and just cut a few of the pieces out to make the slits bigger for more flow

Ok, that's what I have now just without anything cut out. I'll experiment with the one I have and see if that works for me. Thanks for the suggestion /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif
