Too early to really tell. Just ran them for 15 minutes once. Will be putting them into full time use soon

This looks cool, looks like fun,....looks like a lot of work! What about peppermint shrimp to keep aptasia in check?...as long as you don't put in any fish that would eat the shrimp. You might surf around the Tidal Gardens website, that guy farms coral in a greenhouse and has a lot to say about what works and what doesn't for him.

Oh yeah I've watched every Tidal Gardens video I can find lol. I've thought of using peppermint shrimp for aptasia control, I actually have a few but the problem seems to be that my tanks are really deep and they seem to stay at the bottom all the time. I'll probably try a few more because it can't hurt.

Night shot from outside. I hope no one tries to land a plane on it.

Serious quarantine will be your best friend

It is easier to take it slow & qt like crazy then fight aptasia & bubble algae forever

Have the cops been over to check things out yet?
Greenhouse with massive amounts of grow lights... Nothing suspicious at all LOL.

Not that I know of but I would be surprised if they haven't poked their heads in yet. Would probably be more confused if they did. I don't normally have a ton of lights on at night. Just unloading from Fallfest here. Otherwise they are all off by 8 or so.

Update: Wood burner has been in place for about 3 weeks now. Has made a huge difference. If I load it up around 9 PM and let it run all night its usually around 70 degrees in the greenhouse in the morning, 75-76 in the tanks. That I can live with. Cloudy days I've been running halides and a fire to keep it warm and bright. Sunny days when it is 30 or so outside it still gets to around 100 inside. All said, this is still lots of fun.

Cool. Glad the wood burner is doing the trick.

  12. I'm wondering if modified geothermal type system could help you. Tie everything to a thermostat with recirculating pump that when too hot could take the excess heat out of the greenhose and put it in the ground and when too cold bring in heat from the ground. The pump on my geothermal system for my house is really small so slow cirulation. Might have to figure out some type of heat exchanger and compressor. Just a thought

Are you the guy in Holstein, IA with the greenhouse?

For the DC pumps, I run a Waveline DC12000 for my return. It's in my basement, pumping up from about 3' or 4'(I have my sump on a stand) and up to a 6' height tank, so probably up 7', over 2', and up another 6'. I have it going full blast, it puts out a ton of water and I can't tell it's on(very quiet). There's not much heat transfer, with your temp problems in the winter and probably the opposite in the summer, I'm not sure if that's a pro or con. I was talked into the Waveline brand vs Jabeao etc. because it's supposed to have a better volute than the other DC pumps for better head height.

I run a Jebao DCT-12000 externally for my mixing station. It moves a ton of water, but it's pretty loud. I'm not sure if it would be as loud if it were internal.

I am plumbing up a Ecotech Vectra M1 this weekend external for a closed loop on my display, I'll let you know what I think of it. I wouldn't recommend that pump for your situation because it's $200+ more than the previous two pumps. I paid the extra because it's advertised with the quiet drive and being absolutely silent. Since it's in my living room I wanted it as quiet as possible, but your greenhouse wouldn't matter much.

Do you have some kind of monitoring like an Apex to keep track of things? I would definitely want to know if the temp drops so I could stock more wood for days like this weekend is supposed to be. Do you have any heaters in the tanks or rely on room temp?

+1 on geothermal. You should check into that, from what I've read in the past, it could be perfect for your application.

This is pretty cool, I wish my wife would let me make a greenhouse in the back yard!

Yep I'm in Holstein. Good info on the DC pumps. Let me know what you find on the Ecotech. I do have a reef angel and and old aquacontroller monitoring my tank. I do have a 1000 watt heater in my tank but its really not enough to warm the water more than a couple degrees so i rely mostly on room temperature. I've been burning mostly pallets and other "found" wood most of the winter so far but I finally broke down and bought a truck load of split logs this weekend. I got a new job a month or so ago and I get home an hour or so later than I used to so I'm finding it hard to find time to maintain the greenhouse let alone cut wood pretty much every night. The good news is for the most part i am able to keep the temperature around 75 over night fairly easily now. Sunday I loaded the wood stove at around 9 AM and went back in at about 2 PM and it was 118 degrees in there. Sun must have been pretty strong because the fire had long since burned out. The bad news is this is going to end up being a short term project because I'm probably going to end up moving within the next year to be closer to work. So be on the lookout because I'll have a ton of coral to unload at some point.

I've got family in the area(Cherokee), so it would be cool to check out sometime. I meant to get a hold of you over Christmas time, but I just got too busy.

I've got a Cayman sun pendant and lunatek 250/400 watt switchable ballast if you're looking for supplemental lighting. I'd trade for acans.

Hey sorry it's been a while since I've been able to get on. I'm pretty good on lights at the moment but I have tons of acans if you ever want to stop by. I've been able to keep the temp pretty stable with the wood stove. I'm going to have to put my shade cloth back up because with the few really sunny days we've had I've developed a pretty nasty algae bloom in one of my tanks. The nice part is Monday it was like 5 degrees here but the sun was out so the greenhouse was like 95. The fire I had started in the morning probably helped it get up to 70 but I like coming home to a warm greenhouse!
