Just like the title says I'm wondering what the good and bad outcomes are with running a uv light? I have had the same fish in the tank for probably 3-5 weeks and just all the sudden they got some kinda disease that looked like ich but I don't think it was? Killed them all within a day. Even killed one of my black ice clowns : (. So lets hear everyone's opinions on running a uv light..... Ready....... GO

I wouldnt run a tank without em. ESPECIALLY if your gonna have alot of tangs. With how ick prone they are a uv is a must. I know some ppl say it kills certain bacteria in the water but theres alot more pros than cons in my opinion.

I'm no expert, and have never run one. I am not against it I just haven't spent the money on one. It seems that a properly sized ,fed, and maintained UV sterilizer has more pros than cons like Casey said. Will it eradicate all pests in your tank? Absolutely not, most of them aren't actually powerful enough to do anything against the ich parasite, but it seems they kill off enough other waterborne bacteria and nastiness so the fish immune systems stays healthier and they themselves can fight off infection and disease.
You typically don't see "the big guys" set up tanks without them.

Sorry to hear about your loses /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/sad.gif You definitely want to have the UV sterilizer sized correctly and maintained religiously Contact time with the water and light is very important too. I ran a UV on my 135g for about a 1 1/2...no problems with anything and the water was crystal clear :0) I still have the UV if you're possibly interested...
