I'm just getting back into the hobby after 4-5 yrs and the idea of not having sand in your tank is new to me. Also I've seen a lot of tanks with less rock.

Who doesn't use sand and why do you have it or why have you decided to go without it? I have a 1.5 inch sand bed in my tank.

My sps system is sandless, just because I have an incredible amount of flow in there. My LPS system has about an inch of sand

At first I thought your question was "whos tank is sadness" to which I would qualify. My tank is one sad thing to look at currently.

xroads, how much flow do you have. I have 4 koralia 1150GPH flow pumps but only two run at a time. My tank is a 150g tall. My plan is to have a mixed reef with SPS on the top half which is where the hydor pumps reside. My sand doesnt really move much so now I'm wonding if I need more flow.

I do not use sand my my biocube or 65, and I will not have it in my 120 expansion. I like lots of flow, but the bigger issue is the buildup of nutrients. I really doubt I will ever have a sand bed again. Sure you can try and keep it clean, but I could never get to all of it and after a few years when I finally took it out there was so much "nasty" in it that I can't see me ever having one again, unless it's just a tiny little covering.

I forgot to add that in my 65g I run two mp40's and 1 mp10. The biocube is 1 mp10 for the biocube14. I get the new gyre today and will replace the mp40's and 10 in the 65. When I move to the 120 I will run the 2 MP40s and gyre.

I have a 120 sps with no sand. Same as xroads I have lots of flow. I had to blow sand off corals every day and finally removed sand bed a little at a time. Just like hart said. I was amazed at the amount of crap that was built up in the sand. I even had sand sifting gobies, nasserius snails, and a sifting star, a day cleaned sand still alot of poop. I won't have sand again either. Much easier to clean up detritus that settles in a few spots.

Thanks xroads for fixing my post. I'm really tempted to get rid of my sand. Thanks for all of the input. I'm realizing I'm kinda old school, I even have a canopy on my tank.

No sand here--- 120g mixed reef, mostly sps. For me, it seems like its less maintenance having no sand. I've also been successful at keeping the glass scratch free. When I had tanks with sand, the glass seemed to get scratched easily using the mag float.

ok so let's say you convinced me to remove the 1/2 inch of sand I have in my tank, suggestions for removing it? It is not like I can use a teaspoon to remove it. Or is it that painful of a process?

Suck out with vinyl hose during water changes. It took me 3 months to get mine out but it was 3 inches deep in some spots and almost 4 years old. But keep in mind it's tough to get rocks to stay put without sand.

I used to have sand on my first two setups. When I upgraded to my 220 mixed reef I set it up with no sand. I really like it and would do it again for sure.

My 125 is a bare bottom and I love it. No more sand blowing all over. I can keep zoa frags on the bottom without getting covered.

Hey guys. Currently setting up my 120g after moving. This time I will not be using sand. Like most of you it just became a pain to keep clean. It seems now that it is more for looks than anything. As for keeping rocks in place, from what I've seem, connecting rocks with epoxy or drilling holes and using rods will create a solid structure of rock that will support itself. Just a thought.
