Since there is a big discussion going on in a different thread I figured I would start a new one and leave that tread for its intended purpose...
So why did everyone join the GIRS membership?
I joined because I come here alot and I enjoy reading this forum and learning new things about the hobby. So there for I figured I would lend a helping hand by donating the $20 to help keep this community stay strong and help pay for upcoming events (most I wont attend) but it helps pay for those events so other people can come check them out..  I also joined cause its a local club and figured it would be a pretty awesome way to meet new people and see how other people set up there aquariums and maintain them.. I know that if I hadn't joined I would have still meet these people but thats what made me want to join even more, just to help support it..  I also support other reef forums for the same reason...
Interested to hear why others join this community...

I went to a swap in a members garage & was instantly hooked. The camaraderie amongst all the members there with a common love of reefing was awesome!

Like I am sure most others, I found the club on the interweb and peeked my interest. In the short time I have been a member, I have already benefited. Was able to take advantage of a sale and got some frags at great prices. A big advantage for a club like this is you can get a deal and try something new and not be out big bucks for the effort. Also the atmosphere seemed welcoming and I hope to build my DIY skills and with all the talent here reading the old posts that shouldn’t be hard even for a non-handyman like me.

I became a member because I enjoy helping people with questions, and this society provides me access to people I can learn more about reefing from. Also seeing people that share my obsession serves to make me feel sane!

I have benefited greatly from being able to swap items with other members or buy frags and fish. It saves me money, saves resources and it means less pressure on wild populations. Also you get to see all the various ways you can be successful in this hobby and may find something to try with your own set up. Definitely worth 20 bucks a year.

Meet people with the same passion as me
    a wealth of information
    club events
Membership pays for its self from DIY food, discounts from sponsors, discounted group salt buys, and free raffle tickets at spring and fall fest
But the number one reason is that if I ever for any reason need help there is always another member willing to help. such as loaning out equipment in an emergency, help moving and setting up tanks, help with lighting problems, or like this up coming week I'm going on vacation and Nick is coming over everyday while I'm gone to feed my fish and check up on my tanks. thanks Nick

I became a member because the club forum was (and continues to be) a great resource for me in becoming a better reefer. I wouldn't have felt right about continuing to benefit from it and not doing my part to support it.

    No problem Matt
    I echo everything above.
My lousy 20 bucks has probably saved me thousands over the past couple years just from people offering to help when i have a problem, loaning tools and equipment when needed and even dropping everything and coming to help when I have an "emergency".
Have meant some wonderful people here.
