I stumbled across this article today while doing some searches.   It's a couple years old, but still vary relevant.   I does a really good job at explaining what MACNA is all about:

I think we've struggled a bit to get all the GIRS members out there to understand what MACNA is all about.   Hopefully this short read will help some and get a few more of you excited.

simply put, because it cost so much to put on. you dont think these speakers are free do you? the venue along with all the odds and ends that are needed to put a show of this magnitude on is costly.
considering the wealth of information and the chance to see some of the new technology being brought into the hobby is well worth it imo. We spend more on a single frag then what it will cost for everything you will take home from MACNA.

GIRS club members get deeply discounted passes so I'd argue that it doesn't cost much at all for a lot of the people on here.

No need to get nasty. If he doesn't want to come, that's his decision. It's just more great raffle prizes and goodies for the rest of you.

Reasons I can think of to go to MACNA:

#1 - It will probably not be any closer in the next 10 years. Take advantage.
#2 - Vendors. As of right now, there are over 130 booths sold. That's 30 more than Orlando last year, and that was a record year. We are blowing that away.
#3 - Speakers. You could pay $1000 for all the books and DVDs published by these guys, but an all-access pass gets to in to see them all.

That's just off the top of my head but that should be enough for most!!
