I am thinking about spray painting a few coral plugs florescent orange. I will use them as price markers at a frag swap.

Do you suppose I need to coat the plugs with epoxy (or similar?) to prevent leaching of the paint? Or is that overkill?

    Thanks.

Good question Pot Roast! Yes, Krylon spray paint will leach chemicals for an unknown time, even when dry. It has not been tested in an underwater environment. So, yes, Krylon spray paint will likely leach chemicals)

Question: What should I coat the spray painted plugs with to stop the leaching? Epoxy? Polyurethane? Something else?

Marine grade epoxy resin should work

FWIW I spraypainted some pvc for an overflow for my nano tank I built years ago on an ultra low budget. I never noticed adverse effects. I probably had 2' of spraypainted pvc under water for about a year and a half.

That's a pretty good idea about pricing frags though. I wonder if any of the plug manufacturers would considering dying their plugs different colors. I don't imagine it would be too difficult.

Home depot or ace might have it though I wouldnt be suprised if they didnt considering we live nowhere near a marine enviorment.

Why not use plastic golf tees?  They come in lots of colors and are cheap.

FWIW I searched this on reefcentral and many folks reported using krylon with no ill effects. Dry thoroughly of course.
