So I finally got my entire system up and running, my sump was working well, and everything seemed good. Until yesterday. I woke up at 3 AM to my return pump running dry and a wet floor. A whole bucket of RO/DI that had dumped into the system through my ATO and then out of my display and onto the floor because my crap DIY overflow lost its siphon. My overflow is still being a pain even after I sealed virtually every possible joint, and tried a bunch of intake configurations. It still doesn't work like it should. Now I have the check valve hooked up to my skimmer air intake to pull out all the little air bubbles that were accumulating and causing it to lose suction, but that leaves me with no skimmer on top of all that!

Anyway, I really don't want to have to worry about siphons or HOB overflows or anything like that. I'd rather just drill my own tank, so if anyone has a nice 20 gallon high laying around, drilled or not drilled, (or something close to that size, drilled or not) I'm looking to upgrade. I just can't do it on mine because it's in use already.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

oh what a bummer, sorry I don't have a tank to help you out. But we have drilled many tanks, and we have many DIY overflows. The newest design we use has had zero problems, and I get skimming off the top, never looses siphon. I do hope you find what your looking for if you want to drill and go that way! If not, and you want some idea/design help... let me know, I've got several running I could show you that are super easy builds. It would be super easy to make your own.

    Good luck!

Sorry about your mess. That's not what you want to wake up to I know. If you find a tank and it's not drilled and you want to drill it let me know I have 1/2, 3/4, 1", diamond bits. You could bring the tank over and I could drill it for you. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your tank. If you want a cheap tank, Petsmart is having a $1 per gallon sale this weekend. Today is the last day. (At least the one in Cedar Rapids)

    Thanks guys.

Bigkel, I might take you up on that if it isn't too much trouble for you - I have a drill but it's cheap and I think there's a pretty good chance it would crack the glass if I tried myself.

Bob, I didn't know they were having a sale this weekend, I'm definitely going to head up there and get a 20 dollar tank.

I got a drill don't worry about that. You just need to figure out your set up and how big a hole and where you want it and we'll get it done.

I think I want to go with a Herbie style overflow, and I may end up getting a 29 gallon instead just to have more room to work with. Thanks a ton for offering to help, I'll PM you about the holes and when we can do this.

So I checked out the $1 per gallon sale and they didn't have any 20's left, they only had the non-store brands which weren't on sale. I seriously considered buying a 40 breeder for $40 but the manager said it was 100% tempered (don't know if that's true or not) so I didn't buy it.

I'm really considering just making the step up to something bigger. Even though it would be a pain to move it would be easier to drill and all that...anyway if anyone has a 29 gal or a 30 breeder I think that's as big as I'd be comfortable going right now.

This is the info I had found before on the $1 tetra tanks at petco.

    10, 20L, 29 - all no tempered glass
    40B - bottom tempered
    55g - all tempered

Ahh, thank you, good to know. So I could have gotten it. I searched online while I was in the store but I couldn't find anything about what sides were tempered. A 40 probably would have been too big for me to move with anyway. There were no 29 gallons left either.

Still looking for a 29 or a 30 breeder. Maybe a 40 if someone talks me into it and explains how easy it is to move hah.

there will be a sticker in the bottom of all new tanks saying if its tempered or not and in most its a bright orange hard to miss sticker

Yeah I know, it had a tempered sticker but I wasn't sure if that was referring to just the bottom or to the entire thing. I know a lot of the time it's just the bottom that's tempered, but I wasn't willing to risk it and I couldn't find any more information.

I have a tetra 40 breeder brand new and the sticker on the bottom says in big bold letters BOTTOM TEMPERED.....go get that sucker and drill baby drill lol. I started small and a year later went bigger. 40 breeder is a great size and increases your possibilities for livestock. If you have the room for it go for it...you will be much happier if you do.
