   My ballast started smoking today! No idea what is going on!
   I need a dual or two single ballasts that will fire HQI bulbs that are 250 watts.
   I will buy or trade for it asap.

   I would take it apart and see if anything is burnt. Ballasts are pretty easy to work on and only contain a few components.

   Yes! A friend came over and opened it up. Turns out the switch was melted and burnt terribly! So, we just hardwired it so as to not use the switch. This is safe isnt it? Connections are wrapped with electrical tape.

   Bypassing the switch is perfectly safe but I would probably get some plastic wire nuts on the connections.
