I need an external pump for my 90 gallon. The head is only 6 feet but the toal run is about 20 feet. I purchased a used one about a year ago and finally got around to using and it will not pull water from a 5 gallon bucket. I should have done this when I first got it but oh well.

Forgive the dumb question but did you prime the pump?

I filled the intake hose with as much water as possible. With the intake hose off I ran the pump just to see how much pressure it would draw and it did not suck my hand as expected. If there is another way to prime the pump let me know.

I am not sure I am following you. Is there water in the pump? If there is air in the pump it will not draw a vacuum. If the impeller is spinning I bet it's alright.

Is the pump above or below the bucket of water you are drawing from? If the pump is on the floor and its drawing from the bucket, try sucking on the output of the hose until it starts syphoning water from the bucket to the pump.

Both the pump and buckets were on the floor. When I took the drain hose off I could see water rise out of the return.

What is the best way to prime the pump? Should I remove the return hose and fill the pump with water then reattach the hose and try again?

If the in and out hoses are both clear flexible tubing than just hold one in the air and pour water into it. If its clear you should be able to see the water fill the tube until its on the other side of the pump. Try to get all the air out of the tubing and stick the intake side into the 5 gallon bucket. Plug it in and you should have water hitting your ceiling.

I got it to prime last night. I guess I did not have enough water in the intake line. Thanks for the help.
