I have recently purchased a 180 gallon oceanic aquarium with a est. 40 gallon sump.  I need a protien skimmer for the sump. I also would like a better light.  The light on it is a odyssey with 3 metal halides, 250 watts, and 4 96 watt atinics, and moonlight led.  The Ballast is bad on one of the halides.  I would consider replacing if someone had something higher end to sell.  Controller might not be the right word to describe what I am looking for but I want my lights to be automatic and I wouldn't mind being able to control my pumps, besides the return pump I have 2 koralia pumps and a seido.  I am a newbie so any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

I'm taking down a pair of Lumenmax reflectors and Blueline ballasts this weekend. I have xm 400w 20k lamps in them that have been used for about three months, and I also have two brand new lamps just like them. I haven't figured out what I need for them yet, but I'll do a little research on Friday if you're interested.

Let me know. I need to do alot of research because I dont know that much about lighting requirements but I want to be able to put anything in the tank. I dont want to limit myself with my lighting. I love SPS tanks and think that is the direction I am heading if I get educated enough to do it well

If you're just looking for some timers, I have some heavy duty timers that I'm not using that I could sell you. If you're looking for a full controller, check out RC Buy/Sell. You can pick up AC3 units for around $300 to $350 pretty regularly.

Reef Central Buy/Sell forum. I prefer to buy locally to save $$ on shipping and stuff like that, but when you can't find local, RC is a good place to look.

He would have to be on there for awhile before he could see the buy/sell forums. Remember the 50 post and 90 day thing

Lets focus here people. Someone put yourself in my shoes, Newbie, with a little money to invest, whats my best route. Should I get a controller right away or just use timers right now? Can someone explain to a begginer why a controller is an advantage?

I have a Turboflotor 1000 for sale, brand new in the box. It is the version that does not come with a pump, just FYI. You can plumb it to you overflow and not use a pump, but I would think having a pump would be the best. I was asking $150 for it, but will let it go for less, no one is biting.

Well, I see two schools of thought...
    1) Get a controller - A controller will help you to better manage things from day 1.  As you add more things, you have the technology to properly deal with the new stuff you're adding to your tank.  You can better manage temp, see your pH swings, and just generally always know more information about your tank without constantly having to deal with testing.  This is especially the case if you have a smartphone and use it in conjunction to your controller.
    2) Not get a controller - You save the $$ and invest in other things.  A timer will take care of the lights, manually testing might be more work, but it forces you to do it and get a better idea of what's going on in your tank.  A controller can have a tendency to make you lazy in your tank monitoring...and that's not a good thing when you're starting out.  You need to stay on your toes and keep on top of things until you have a better idea of what's going on.  Getting media reactors, better lights, and a better skimmer might be a better place to spend your money up front.  Spend as much on your skimmer as you can afford...remember, it's one of the core components of your tank that you want to be reliable and efficient.
    I hope this helps.

I would hold off on the controller for now. It is a nice piece of equipment to have, but in my opinion, the last thing you need to buy. In the begining I think it's better to spend your money on filtration, lighting and other equipment that will go a long way in keeping your tank more stable. It makes basic husbandry easier, less frequent and therefore you're more likely to do it. Plus you also get a good understanding of you system and it's requirements in the process. So by the time you're ready to add a controller you'll know exactly what you need it it do. I've been running my tank lighting with timers for the last 2yrs with not one issue.

I am not fully decided but please keep your eyes and ears out. I think I want a controller and an AC3 at that. I have web access nearly all the time and I like the piece of mind that once set up I will be able to monitor and set controls on my tank. Some of my nervousness about reefkeeping is the expense of everything and I think spending some extra money to ensure it is properly monitered is worth it. So please keep a look out for me. You guys have been great! I also would like on opinion if the octopus 200 would be enough of a skimmer. The tank with the sump is approx. 220 gallons. I will have almost 250 lbs. of live rock in it by the time I get it all. (in about another week). For now I am going to continue using the 250 watt halides I already have but I will keep my eyes out for a good deal to upgrade to 400's.
