I am starting to have an issue with Xenias getting out of control.  They are starting to encroach on my SPS corals and that's where I draw the line.  I haven't seen what happens when in a Xenia vs Acro frag duel but I don't think the outcome would make me happy.  Making matters worse they are on rock that I can't pull out of the tank.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove/kill them?  And before anyone even suggests it, my wife has already said no way to me getting a laser to fry them.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Just take a pair of bone cutters and chip the rock out from under there base, takes a few seconds, you don't have to kill anything and you might make a buck or two selling the frags

I just take a razor blade and cut them off. The problem is they grow back from the base left behind. You can probably kill that with the kalk paste easier than killing the whole head in the tank. That's what I would do. Grab the head with a surgical clamp with one hand and razor it off with the other.

If you can get it out without killing it, we would like some at the store & could work out a trade.

I haven't had luck killing it with just kalk paste, it just seems to set them back. I periodically pull my rock out and use a razor blade, but that tends to leave little pieces behind. Keep in mind any bits that become free floating when you start cutting have a pretty good chance of settling and coming back elsewhere in your tank. I like the idea of a razor/kalk combo though. I haven't been able to eradicate it, but its contained.

Xroads, PM me for a frag, I saved some last time I started hacking away. Its still alive, but hasn't been growing at all, I think my water quality is too spot on /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif

Xenia can be removed without killing it or leaving a `foot`good behind to to regrow. Get a good grip on it and apply firm, steady pressure and it will release from whatever it is attached to. They can then be sold, traded or whatever. Works well 90% of the time (sometimes they do tear and then the stump will regrow).

    Some pretty good feedback!

I'm a little nervous about causing an avalanche if I try the bonecutters on some of these rocks. I may try to pull them off as Dave says... but I'm not sure how well I'll be able to get a good grib on them, aren't they pretty squishy and slimy?

If I do end up going the kalk paste route, could I get a little detail on how this is applied? I thought with kalk paste you needed to pull the rock out and then apply the paste which kills it. I'm doubtful about my prospects of pulling these rocks out.

    Thanks!

Upon inspection there is no way I can get that rock out without causing a collapse of over 200 lbs of aquascaping. This isn't my most porous rock that it's on either so I'm doubtful I'll be able to cut it. I'll try pulling it off and seeing if I can reattach it in my frag tank. But my primary concern at this point is to get it out of there before it does damage to my sps corals.
