If all goes according to plan, I'll be moving from the AC3 to an APEX this weekend.
I know that there's some significant differences in the units as far as functionality, but how about from a programming perspective?    Is my existing AC3 program usable at all or do I need to re-write from scratch?
At one point there was an un-official guide to the Apex out there.    Does someone have a link to that?
Anything else obvious I should be aware of?
    Thanks!

The Apex programming is easier than the AC3 programming in my opinion. The primary difference is that instead of writing one program to run all of your automation, you write logic that's outlet specific.

    Here's a link to the guide: http://reeftech.webs.com/Apex%20New%20User%20Guide.pdf

    JB,

I made the switch myself this winter. I had a DA Reefkeeper. To make sure the transition went smooth. I hooked up the Apex and then gradually moved all my equipment over to it. That way I could monitor voltages, make sure all my programming is correct, and also troubleshoot issues before they happen. It took about a month to do it all. Then another month to tweak it. Then you will find yourself buying modules and more energy bars. That is the worst part.

I love my apex and find the programming kinda easy. It was tricky at first but the manual, users guide, and the neptune forum at RC helped me through it. I have no programming experience at all and no clue how to setup a network. I had Bluefool help me with the network setup. I assume you will be able to do that part easy.....

JB, as you know I was forced into the change a month or so ago. The main help will be having your AC3 program handy. You may be able to cut and paste a few things but generally I think you will be putting things in new with the AC3 program as reference. From a programming standpoint it is the same with the addition of more commands and drop-down programming for certain items like lights and heaters if you want to use it. You can choose advanced mode for everything to type in the program yourself, but in the case of lights and heaters why not use their drop downs. Definitely read AJ's thread as I am sure you already have and are planning to continue. It is a great resource when new to the Apex coming from the AC3.
As AJ said the main difference is you pick an outlet on your powerbar or DC4/8 and program just that outlet then move to the next outlet.
One caution I would double check critical programs daily (or more) for a week or so. I can't explain it but I had two occurences of programs mysteriously changing when I hadn't touched it. One was just lighting so no big deal. The other was a statement like if Ph > 8.3 then Off on the Alk pump, it got changed to something like if temp > 8.3 then ON which dumped 1/2 gallon of alk into my system. If this only happened once I would blame myself, but twice I just don't think so. I was still tweaking other outlets just not those. Other than that it seems to be as dependable as the AC3 thus far. Really I don't notice much difference. I do like programming on outlet at a time, it is less confusing.

I've got the Apex hooked up now and I'm slowly but surely moving things over to it. I've got my light programs written and working, so that's done. I think I've got my head around how most of the programming works now. You guys are right that there are some serious improvements over the AC3.

I'm slightly kicking myself in the rear over controllers. I bought an Andruino Uno and thought i'd be faster, easier, and maybe a tad cheaper to go about building my own controller. MISTAKE! I should've just bought a Reef Angel or an Apex. Anyone have a controller for sale? Looking towards the cheaper side of things as I dont have much to spend on one. Also would like the net module so I can monitor the tank from work.

Check with Bluefool...I think he was looking to build a DIY controller and get rid of his Apex. I haven't seen him around lately, but you may be just the person he's looking for.
