YASHA Gobies Spawned!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by DSPENCE, Jul 5, 2016.

  1. So psyched! My pair of Yasha Gobies spawned and the eggs hatched last night. Does anyone have any idea what I would need to do to try to raise them?? I also have a pair of Helfrichi Firefish in my main DT.....has anyone had luck getting them to spawn and raising them??

Hey that is really really super cool.

Yashias were just done by Roger Williams University. The guy there said it is pretty easy.

You need 2 basic things. Parvocalanus copepods. The problem with those is that they only really eat live Isocrysis algae. To raise that you need a sterile way to raise the algae along with CO2 & fertilizer.

No one has ever done Helfrichis, mainly because they fight each other too much, but I have suspicions they would be like raising Yashias.

It is a major commitment to try and raise something like this. If you are up for it, I would be glad to advise you on getting started.

  4. It sounds like a lot of work, or maybe just sounds overwhelming because I've never done anything like this before. Would be so cool to raise them. I've never done algae or any pods so would be all new to me.

The Helfrichi have been together in a 30 gallon tank since February....they're always in close proximity to each other. I had a second "pair" in a separate tank that would occasionally quarrel and I had thought that maybe it was because the tank wasn't big enough. They're in a 135 now but they seem to have staked out their own areas so they probably weren't a pair.

I haven't seen any larvae in the tank with the Helfrichi but haven't been watching for anything. It was purely by chance that I saw the hatch in the tank with the Yasha because it was about mid-night....was feed the Bolano and had the flashlight and they were all jumping around in the light. There's a pair of Flame Wrasses in the tank with the Helfrichi so would have to do something different to try to raise them. The Yasha are by themselves in a 16 gallon rimless and it would be easy enough for me to set up a different type of filtration or even slow down the pump and try to block the overflows with filter media? Or would you try to remove them and raise them in their own tank....the larvae?

yes it is 100% impossible to raise any type of marine fish in its parent tank.

They have to have a special tank, light, flow, food, etc.

The tanks have to be kept tinted with algae to provide enough food for the larvae. This is the only good pic I could find as an example.

I am not 100% these were Yashia larvae then.

This is what they look like on hatch day when they hatch on day 5. If they were jumping all around, are they perhaps mysid shrimp which look very similar to fish larvae?
